More featuresYou are in: Black Country > Features > More features > The Black Country Challenge  Local schools up for the challenge The Black Country ChallengeYoung people across the Black Country in Year 9 are being invited to enter an awards scheme dedicated to finding the most talented students across the region. The Black Country Challenge was launched by Minister for the Black Country, Jim Knight, at Walsall Art Gallery on Wednesday 7 May. It is a new government programme of support for schools in the region. The 2008 Black Country Student Awards, part of the Department for Children, Schools and Families Black Country Challenge campaign, offer year 9 pupils the chance to win 'money can't buy' experiences and are supported by BBC WM.  Student Awards 2008 The categoriesThey can enter a choice of five award categories: writing for the media, music, performing arts, new media or science. Money can't buy prizesWinners will win unique 'money can't buy' prizes from the awards' sponsors; Royal Shakespeare Company, Iceni TV, Birmingham Conservatoire, Serco and the Express and Star. Winners will also be invited to a high profile awards ceremony in November 2008.
