How to multiply and divide by 0, 1, 10 and 100

Multiplication is working out how many groups of something you have altogether.

Division is working how many you get, after sharing a number between another number.

You can use place value charts to make multiplying and dividing easier to understand.

When you multiply a number by 0, the answer is always 0. When you multiply a number by 1, it just stays the same.

When you multiply a number by 10, it jumps one place to the left in the place value chart.

When you multiply a number by 100, it will jump two places to the left in the place value chart, as you are making it 100 times bigger.

When you divide a number by 10, it jumps one place to the right in the place value chart, because you are making it 10 times smaller.

When you divide a number by 100, it jumps two places to the right in the place value chart, as you are making it 100 times smaller.

The decimal point never moves; the numbers always move around the decimal point.
