Using commas in a list

A head of broccoli, a jar of strawberry jam and a bowl of soup.

Commas can separate words or phrases when you write more than two things in a row.

They help show where one item ends and the next one begins.

Without commas in a shopping list, items like:

Broccoli, jam, soup…

Might read as:

Broccoli jam soup…

… hmm no thank you!

A head of broccoli, a jar of strawberry jam and a bowl of soup.

How to make a list using commas

You use commas to separate words or phrases in a list, especially when there are more than two items, to make meaning clear.

The final two items in a list are not joined with a comma. Instead they are joined with 'and' or 'or'.

You use 'and' if it's an additional item:

Wands, cauldrons and potions.

A wand, a cauldron and a red and a green potion.

You use 'or' if there's a choice between the items:

A green potion, a red potion or a blue potion.

Commas are also important in descriptive lists to give each detail space, helping the reader picture things more clearly:

A wooden wand, a black cauldron and a blue potion.

Without commas, lists can become confusing or misunderstood.

Example 1

Why is Elsie’s potion list confusing without commas?

smelly cheese toenails knitted spider socks unicorn dung beetles and the nose hair from a sheep…

a) She used too many ingredients.

b) She forgot to include the final item.

c) The words ran together, so it’s not clear what the real ingredients were.

A piece of paper with a potion recipe written on it, with a feather quill.

Example 2

Each comma in a list can only separate single words, not longer phrases or clauses.

True or false?

A desk with a cauldron on, some toenail clippings, smell cheese, two potions and a spider wearing socks.
