Don Rogers in his Swindon heyday

Interview with Don Rogers

BBC Radio Swindon's Sandy Martin recently chatted with bonafide Swindon Town Football Club legend Don Rogers. Listen to the interview.

Don Rogers is possibly the most well-known Swindon Town player of all time and certainly the best-loved.

His heroic status amongst Swindon fans waa cemented when he led the team to a 3-1 victory against Arsenal in the 1969 League Cup Final. Don has long since returned and has run his own sports shop on Faringdon Road in the town for over 20 years.

BBC Radio Swindon's Sandy Martin recently paid a visit to Don at his shop to find out how he is getting on following his third hip operation, his thoughts on current footballers such as Rio Ferdinand pocketing a salary of £100k a week and just what it was like coming home to Swindon after scoring two goals in Swindon's winning League Cup Final Match.

I've been watching Palace since 1969 and Don is my favourite Palace player even though he really belongs to the great Swindon Town. I got some quotes in his Biography. He really is still regarded as a Palace legend even though he only played for us for a couple of seasons. Why did he never play for England? I watch our 5-0 win over Man Utd regularly on DVD and The Don still thrills me to this day. A little over a week after that game I saw Led Zeppelin at Alexandra Palace for £1. Hoe times change. Palace and Swindon should do some game of some kind especially for hip replacement funds or whatever.

Hi The hairs on my neck still stand up on the back of my neck when Don gets the ball and glides over the muddy surface at Wembley. For me the perfect footballer. I gave him my lovingly put together STFC scrap book when I was a lad as the Advere invite dpeople to go and visit him during his firtst hip operation. He was in hospital but I was too shy to speak to him really and soon left. I idolised him so much and at 55 still do now! My Dad who taught at Ferndale was a decent cricketer and remembers batting with the Don. Great memories and we who were there love him to bits. Not just Arsenal but Shanklys Liverpool and many others. He took apart the best defences with his pace and tricky skills. He'd be amazing today in the Premier league. Thanks Don and God bless.

I followed the youth team when Don started playing. I remember Wembley 1969, I got him to sign my programme 24/2/09. I said i waited 40 years for this. I remember a fantastic performance at West Ham in the cup, (Moore, Peters, Hurst). Voted player of month by London papers. Brilliant for Crystal Palace against Man Utd

I was 14 years old when I saw Don Rogers play in the 1969 League Cup Final.I have watched football over 45 years and still think of that 3rd goal! One of the greatest ever. Thanks Don from a Leeds United fan.
