Celebrating 5 years of Top of the Pops Online
20002001200220032004
The site in 2000

It's the year 2000. If you believe everything you hear in pop songs, Prince has got a hangover and Jarvis Cocker is moaning about time-keeping. By now, we all thought we'd be eating space food and taking regular trips to the moon. But apart from Geri Halliwell, we've all got our feet firmly on Planet Earth.

By now, there are 23 homes in the UK that have one of those new-fangled interwebnet connections and the number is multiplying at an alarming rate. Mainly because we can't do our sums. But thankfully, some of you out there are clever enough to hunt out the brand new Top of the Pops website. When we showed it to the TV show's Executive Producer of the time, Chris Cowey, he slapped us on the shoulders proudly, and said "it's a bit small". Happy days...

This year's Top 5 Stories
Back in 2000, mp3 was a dirty word. Charlotte Church wouldn't even touch the communion wine and Peter Andre was a washed up old has-been. My, how things have changed. Kind of. Anyway, let's take a wander down pop's memory lane to remind you what was happening way back when.

MadonnaWhat a year for Madge! She started at No.1, moved to Blighty, got pregnant, had her new single leaked on the 'net, had a baby, grabbed another No.1, played live and then got married in Scotland!

Sophie Ellis Bextor

Sophie Ellis Bextor This year's biggest chart spat was between Spiller (feat. our Soph) and Truesteppers (feat. Victoria Beckham and Dane Bowers). It was handbag (house) at dawn. And that was just Dane!

Robbie Williams was in trouble with the BBC who banned parts of the video for 'Rock DJ'. No, it wasn't the scary sight of Rob in his pants, but the singer removing his "skin" was deemed a strip too far.

Billie

Billie PiperLong before the TARDIS, Billie was a pop star - our own Britney. She was so famous that she had her own stalker. No, not Chris Evans - a woman called Juliet Peters was convicted for harrassing her.

Kirsty MacCollJust before Xmas, the singer was tragically killed on a boating holiday in Mexico, aged 41. Kirsty's duet with the Pogues 'Fairytale of New York' was especially poignant this year.

News imageDon't let the picture fool you. Though we were important enough to get an interview with Coldplay back in 2000, we didn't get Chris. Instead it was the drummer and bassist. Oh, the glamour...Read The Interview
