Lara and Max from BBC RaW

BBC RaW's Lara and Max

Carry on the story competition

We've been talking about comics - from The Beano to Batman, and how they're great for telling stories. Well, now we want you to have a go at writing a story and your story could end up in a book!

Why not have a go at writing your own story about one or more of the characters from Max and Lara's Amazing Travelling Space Circus? Try it in comic strip form, or just written text and send it off to us straight away!

Baked Bean

Max and Lara are orphaned twins who inhabit a magical place, full of weird and wonderful creatures, where anything can happen.

Originally devised by the BBC as characters in a series of books to inspire adults to start reading with their families, they're now fully fledged characters in their own right.

Well, we want to find out what happens next with Max and Lara, and we need your help!

Make up a story all about Max and Lara or any of the characters found in the Max and Lara's Amazing Travelling Space Circus book and tell us what happens next.

You can make the characters do anything - visit other planets, come round for tea or go off on a new space mission (you can even involve members of your family in the story).

Call 0800 0150 950 to get a free copy of Max and Lara's Amazing Travelling Space Circus.

We'll be choosing the best stories to go into a new RaW book and there are lots of family cinema tickets to be won. You could go to the cinema with your child once a fortnight for a year!

BBC RaW

RaW is the BBC's biggest ever campaign that aims to help adults to read and write better.

Although there is a special focus on family learning, RaW is for everyone - there are 12 million adults in the UK who struggle with reading and writing.

Visit the BBC RaW website for more information.

How to enter

  • The story must be written by an adult over 18.
  • What happens in the story is the most important thing.
  • It should take about one or two minutes to read out loud.
  • The closing date is 31 January 2008.

Download the comic strip template and create your story as a comic strip

Or, write your story as text then send your comic strip or written story, together with any additional sheets to:
