She sent us the photos of her trip for a family reunion in Poland at Christmas... and we've selected some of them for you to enjoy too! Christmas Cribs Early in 2004, The Lowry Theatre Gallery in Manchester gave us all a unique Christmas treat with an exhibition of Krakow's famous 'Szopki' or Christmas cribs, which are in fact the portable theatres for traditional puppet Nativity plays.
Inspired by the fantastic shapes and bizarre spires of Krakow's church of the Virgin Mary, these Christmas Cribs resemble fairytale castles.
The Krakow tradition of making decorated cribs dates back to the 13th century and remains a popular hobby. The city boasts several dynasties of Christmas-crib makers where two or three generations construct cribs every year.
Crib builders bring their latest works to the city's Grand Square and a selection is chosen for display in the City of Krakow Historical Museum over Christmas. For more about the Lowry see their web-site
