The Big Debate

On the Radio Stoke faith programme (every Sunday morning on 94.6FM), we pose 'The Big Debate ' - a look at some of the great moral problems of our day. Join in the debate on our messageboards...

Our current debates is:

Should the way we live our lives have any affect on the jobs we're allowed to do?

Do our lifestyles rule us out of performing certain roles or is what we do in private completely separate from how we're seen in public?

Clive Gardner was a vicar until three years ago when he left his post after announcing to his congregation that he was gay. He felt that he could no longer work for the Church of England and be openly homosexual.

A survey's about to be carried out amongst members of the Anglican church that will reveal for the first time, the number of gay and lesbian clergy. The survey will also disclose the number of priests who are single or in relationships.

But does sexuality matter if people are good at their jobs? Or do our lifestyles preclude us from performing certain roles in society?

Have your say on our messageboards below:

Of course your personal tastes matter when it comes to what job you do. You'd never employ a Muslim as a vicar because his fundamental beliefs differ from the teachings of that religion... so by that token should you really have a gay person as a vicar?

honestly who cares any more? Sex was supposed to eb sacred once upon a time, and I remember nuns saying that it wasn't for fun you did sex, but for BABIES. Dose anyone beleive all that nonsense any more? sex is part of life, like eating. Sure, we must be 'moral' about our eatung habits and also our sex habits, but, pleaaaaze!, no sex at all? Grow up.

the trouble is thast medicine has adavnaced so far that it has left ancient teachings behind. Of course life is sacred; and always will be. But medicine can now sustain human beigns in a way that Moses never thought - we have people now who are shreds of themselves beign kept alive...
this is not an easy choice! the courage to end one's own life in dignity by these people (and remenber that they are VERY VERY few who have such ciourage) is surely the best evidence we have that such decisions are moral
