To be in debt used to mean you’d hang your head in shame. Not so anymore…

How are you doing for money? Are you someone who's good with their pennies? Or do you spend, spend, spend? 

Well today it's easier then ever to buy things with money that you don't actually have. Walk down the high street and there are banks and shops offering you credit cards and loans left, right and centre, offering new ways to get into debt.

But you'll also probably remember it wasn't always like this. Debt used to be something with a real stigma and almost shame attached to it. Bills weren't things you shoved in drawers and hid from, they were things you paid in full. 

Someone who remembers these times better than most is Mike Garner, a retired bank manager from Stafford. BBC Radio Stoke's Mick Tucker went to meet him...
