With the clocks going back this week can you remember in the early 70s when they didn't alter the clocks and it was dark until 9am every morning in the winter and school kids were issued with bright orange "diddy jackets" and "arm bands" so they could be seen as they walked to school in the dark

Linda bradwell.
I used to go down to london to visit my eldest sister. bell bottoms were in fashion up here. I came back from london once, not saying anything to any of my mates. But meeting them in tiffs newcastle. I was wearing a pair of parallel trousers, poloneck jumper with waistcoat. And i must have been one of the first in the area wearing platform shoes. The look on my mates faces. MY GOD WHATS SHE WEARING NOW. a few weeks later the fashion was up here. Ive still got the waist coat which my sister bought me for my 21st birthday in 1976.

Just listening as usual to the show basking in the subnshine here, My first Gig was Status Quo at crewe and alsager college in the 70s before they were shot to tv stardom

Dave Cawley
re- the Golden Torch in Tunstall ,i used to go there quite alot in the 60s and early 70s. i also went to the Embassy club in Burslem; and the pass out system they had when you could go out and then back in by use of the pass out. from time to time the Torch and the Embassy had the ame artiste booked on the same night, they would appear at one early in the evening then to the other club later, with use of the pass out we could see who ever it was twice on the same night! the first i can remember was Dave berry and the Cruisers.
then the city had more than enough venues where we could enjoy good nights out, sadly they are now gone.

LED ZEPPELIN at TRENTHAM GARDENS in 1971 -- Hello All, I'm looking to contact anybody who may have recorded LZ at the above gig. Hope you can help! Thanks, keith lambertfelixstowe

Mike
Although I was not born around the Clangers time, I have seen and watched clips and I'm very good at impersonating them!

Simon Ward
Great show - as an exiled Stokie I listen every week up near Chorley - love to keep in touch with my home town and the greatest musical decade (although 10 minutes of Yes was about 10 minutes too much!). If you could give a mention to my lads Callum and Daniel it would make their day and I'd love to hear any of the following:- The Only Ones - Another Girl Another Planet / Stiff Little Fingers - Johnny Was or Listen / Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World / The Members - Sound of the Suburbs / or, showing my age, Blackfoot Sue - Standing in the Road / Cozy Powell - Na Na Na
Keep up the good work. All the very best

Floyd in Staffs
From Keele Univ website .. “I had a poster on my Hawthorns B block wall of the Pink Floyd concert when I was a student at Keele in 71, or I thought I did. I seem to remember it had the Tremeloes topping the bill with the Floyd as a supporting act, but now I'm wondering if I didn't dream all this; they were heady times after all... The Floyd played Keele on 27th November 1968 though, that much seems certain. ”. Mick Byrne (1975 graduate)

Banned in the 70s
Hi Tim, Here are a few of the records which were banned in some way during the 1970s after you mentioned bammomg in this weeks show:
Love to love you baby by Donna Summer (for being too raunchy)... The Winker Song (Misprint) by Ivor Biggin (aka Doc Cox from Thats Life)... The entire back catalogue of Judge Dread... The Lone Ranger by Quantum Jump (when it was first released in 1976)... Under One Roof by the Rubettes (which you played the other week)... Honky Tonk Angel by Cliff Richard (banned by Cliff himself when he was told what it was about - he had already performed it on Top of the Pops and Supersonic)... Give Ireland back to the Irish by Wings (announced as a record by a group called Wings on chart rundowns in the 1972 - so Macca released Mary Had a Little Lamb to get back to them)... Lola by the Kinks (until they changed Coca Cola to Cherry Cola in the lyrics)... Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols (now OK to play)... Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed (banned only after it had been a hit when Radio One banning committee realised what it was about)... Radio Luxembourg banned Eye Level by the Simon Park Orchestra from its charts because they didn't like it!... The Flasher by Mistura (just because of its title - it was an instrumental)... Johnnie Walker took Give a Little Love by the Bay City Rollers off the turntable early because he didn't like it prompting protests from thousands of Rollers fans... You're fabulous babe by Kenny Williams (for being from an advert and seen as advertising the product on the BBC)... The Magic Roundabout by Jasper Carrott...
Cheers Jonathan

Scott

Jonathan
Who would have won the Mercury Prize for Best Album if the prize had been going in the 70s ?Would the classics by people like David Bowie, Roxy Music, Led Zep and Pink Floyd have won or would it have been the weird bits that would have triumphed ?

Who were the act (shown on Clive Anderson's look on TV Talent Shows this week) with a clip from New Faces in the 70s which included both an Elvis impersonator and a bloke throwing a custard pie at a lady with long blonde hair - Clive said they won that week as the juggler had a bad week

Michael Earith

TIM REPLIES: Hi Julie. Thanks for your comments. You can email the pic to surfin.stoke@bbc.co.uk and we'll do the rest. Look forward to adding to the Surfin' photo gallery. Best wishes, Tim.

Mark, Tunbridge Wells
Hi Tim,Thank you for replying personally to my previous message, I certainly didn't expect that! Thank you also for getting hold of the Dead End Kids track - especially bearing in mind the lengths you had to go to.

TIM REPLIES: Mark -- you're more than welcome. I saw it as a personal challenge. Thankfully it paid off. All the best, Tim.

David
When will you start updating the playlists regularly?First and last.. the same feature just appeared on Barry Hydes 70s Album show on BBC 3 counties??This with clive eakin on BBC coventry-warwick are worth a listen..

TIM REPLIES: Thanks David. Will keep an eye on the missing playlists for you. Funny that the same feature appeared elsewhere -- great minds eh? Co-incidentally, a feature I started on Surfin' the 70's called 'Tunes from the Airing Cupboard' ended up being used on late night Radio 2. Best wishes, Tim

Julie Condliffe
Listening to your show on Monday last you said you were going to play Alvin Stardust on the next show, I have been a fan of Alvins for a long time now and seen and met him loads of times, he's a great performer still at his age and also a real genuine guy, so it would be nice to get a mention. Thanks A lot. Julie Condliffe.x ( I'll post a picture on the web also.)

Mark, Tunbridge Wells
Hi Tim, I've recently discovered your excellent show on the BBC iPlayer. Although living in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, I'm outside of your catchment area, I want to congratulate you on a great show, particularly the fact that you don't just play the same old familiar tracks that other 70s shows do. If I might venture a request, I'd love to hear Breakaway by The Dead End Kids again after 32 years. Keep up the good work.

trevor heath
An update to the said joke shop in hanley , yes it was at the top of hope street and we bought little glass stink bombs that smelt like rotten eggs, crystal bangers that you throw on floor. Very sour sweets. All for just for fun. Also I remember the music shop plus the leather shop. Ok Trev

Michael Earith
Dear TimI would like you to dig out if possible sometime please,"Car 67" by "Driver 67" issued on the Logo labelin late 78/early 79.even though some people I know thought it was one of the daftest records ever to be released, though I don't think so. Has anyone also ever thought of doing a similar programme for the 1980s, it could be called something like "Exploring the Eighties" or something like that. Many ThanksYour's FaithfullyM W EARITH

Dear TimFirstly Thanks for playing the Gilbert Becaud record last week, now I wonder if you could do the same with"Daylight Katy" by Gordon Lightfoot which was released in late Summer 1978on Warner Bros, because it reminds me of going out withAlsager Cranberry Junior School on a 2 night away trip to Beeston Castle thatyear & hearing it on the radio of my teacher,Mr Clarke's Ford Capri on the way home as a passenger, because I did not wish to travel on the coach with the rowdy boys in them days. Many ThanksYour's FaithfullyM W EARITH

I see after borrowing the "airing cupboard" idea Radio Two are launching a "Sounds of the 70s with Johnnie Walker" on Sunday afternoons from 3pm to 5pm with original "Pop the Question" quiz that I used to listen to in the school playground after the Top 30 rundown in the 70s when Johnnie Walker was on Radio One

Hey Tim,last one before the big fella arrives,Merry Christmas to you and thanks for bringing us a little piece of 70's heaven every week over the last 12 months, dont forget local lad Lemmies birthday is on Christmas Eve,so any early Motorhead would be a bonus, although not festive,so maybe another time eh,thanks Tim could I put in a showstopper for Yes and Roundabout, cheers all the best.Geoff.

Rocket Ron
I nearly fell off my chair when I heard you play Rescue Company no 1 ands Life’s too short. Last week. I’ve been searching for years for the record and have not even managed to find a mention of it on the web. Any ideas where I can get a copy from? What about ‘String Driven Thing’ and It’s a Game must be from around the same period.

Lee from Crewe
Hiya Tim, can I have a Christmas hit from the year I was born please, Gregg Lake, I believe in father christmas, thanks, Lee.

Hi Tim,hows it going, love the show,I was thumbing through the old collection the other day,and had totally forgot that Heart first appeared in the 70's,do you remember the track 'Barracuda'I think lifted from the 'Little Queen'album, not sure if the single charted in the uk,but never the less a cracking track, any chance of hearing them two gorgeous Wilson sisters again. Thanks Tim,keep on bringing back the 70's.

Mary from Crewe
Hi Tim,can you please do B.O.G.O.F for me please? I would really like to hear 2 songs from the Chris De Burgh album, Spanish Train, they being, Just another poor boy, and Spanish Train, pleeeese, I have seen him in concert 41 times and got my next 2 booked for April and May next year. Jonathan from Otley
The Lieutenant Pigeon boys once went on an edition of the Bay City Rollers TV show "Shang a Lang" in 1975 to promote their train recordings album (the show was shown on satalite TV a few years ago)On another subject can anyone remember a record from 1979 called "Pyscho Chicken" which was a cover of the Talking Heads "Psycho Killer" but with chicken clucks

Jonathan from Otley
Funny you should say that the Ides of March track sounded like it should have been in a Rocky film because Jim Peterik from the band wrote "Eye of the Tiger" as when Ides of March split Jim formed Survivor in 1973 where he was the keyboard player

Chris and Ruth from Kent
Found your programme on iplayer, both in our 50's newly married and it takes us back to our youth, nice one, can you play anything for us new listeners

Alan From Stoke
I too remember seeing Steve Gibbons supporting Bill Nelson's Be Box Deluxe at Stoke - a great gig.Any chance of playing either Steve's title album track 'No spitting on the Bus' or does anyone else remember a 99p 10inch EP from the George Hatcher Band - 'Have Band will travel'(1977 I think) - a great R&B 'album' at the time - or so I remember - hope it still stands the test of time!

dave and thelma from market drayton
hi tim one record that always reminds us of our courting days in the 70s played regulary on saturday nights in the bali hi at tiffanys gimme some by jimmy bo horne we are now celebrating our 30th wedding aniversary on the 18th of november and would love to hear it again great memories fab show tim keep it coming

Jonathan from Otley
I don't think the Don Farden track you half played on the show was the one the version which made the charts in 1970. The version you played sounded like a re recording more in a Dire Straits style - the 1970 hit single version was much better

Jonathan from Otley
With Poppy Day this week it put me in mind of an act called 14 - 18 which had a small hit with a wartime medley "Goodbye ee" and the strange thing is that it was Pete Waterman on the track - the only hit single he has ever sung on. I have only heard it once but I think it shows why he got Kylie and Co to sing his songs in the future

Tom in Missouri, USA
Super groovy show you have. I listen across the pond on-line. Could you slip Sammy Johns' "Chevy Van" into your playlist sometime? Thanks! Tom

ROY
Hi Tim, the seventies for me were just brilliant times. And back then like now, I enjoyed listening to radio in the evenings. Of course then it was always the fab 208 (Radio Luxembourg). One band that featured quite regular was Jigsaw, and a particular song they used to play a lot in 1972 was 'Keeping My Head Above Water'. A great record that I've never heard played since. So I offer you a challenge Tim, ;o) to find it in the airing cupboard (or any where else) and give it a spin. I reckon you might struggle with this one, so it may help you to know it was from the album 'Aurora Borealis'. Do yer best Tim!This is a brilliant show, - Unique even

Big Geoff,in Fenton

Hi Tim, if you could play ' Born To Be Alive' from Patrick Hernandez during your show it would put a great BIG smile on my face :-) Great song in its own right and a track from the mid 70's that featured on the soundtrack for the film 'Sunburn' starring Farrah Fawcett Majors !!! Top show ... Keep those memories coming !!!

The kazoo track on the "weird bit" put me in mind of the 1976 single "Blaze Away" by Me Myeslf and Me Again which was BBC audio engineer Viv Fisher who made the sound of a brass band with his own mouth (see Viv Fisher wikapedia) - this record was played to death by John Dunn on the old style Radio 2

news of Lance Harvey
Hello Radio Stoke,I am contacting you as I thought you may be interested in the information below. It is the sad news of the death due to cancer of Lance Harvey, in hospital at Stafford in summer 2008. Lance's real name was Harvey Frost and he was a very well known singer throughout our area and indeed nationally during the 60's and 70's. He also appeared in Radio Stoke's Back To The Sixties show at the Victoria Theatre in 2007 along with many of his old acquaintances including Bri Martin of Bri Martin and The Marauders fame. He worked for many years at the BBC’s Pebble Mill studios but never gave up his love of singing as he continued to perform after work on several nights per week at various venues. During the heyday of the Potteries music scene he and his group The Kingpins, were at the very top of the list of local guys pushing for universal recognition, making a couple of records and appearing in the popular talent shows on the TV of the day. Later he became the resident artiste and/or compere at different Staffordshire venues, such as The Crystal Ballroom, Newcastle, The Adulte at Burslem, Top of The World ballroom, Stafford and Jollies, Longton. He continued his singing career even after being diagnosed with the illness last October until he became too ill to perform earlier this year. Despite undergoing a major operation and hospital treatment for the cancer and although he fought very bravely without complaining once during that time, he lost the battle at 9:30am on Saturday last. Lance was my brother, he was very well liked and highly respected by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed by everyone. He leaves his wife of 43 years Jenny whom he met whilst singing at the Blue Ball, Derby, a son Jeremy and two young Grand-daughters, Gretel and Morwenna. Regards;Derek Frost

That Stoney and Meatloaf track was great - reminded me a bit of Edwin Starr. Also enjoyed the "Before he was famous" John Miles track from a couple of weeks back

Enjoyed the Little River Band track - not heard it for about 30 years. At the time in 1976 there was a talk of a wave of Aussie Bands as Sherbert were in the charts with "Howzat" and ACDC had emerged with "Its a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll"

Hello Tim...discovered your programme couple of months ago. Have listened to it religiously ever since. At 51 years old I am definitely a child of the seventies. I remember the year I got a Raleigh Chopper for my birthday. It was truly impressive. In fact it impressed the girl down the road so much she started to call for me. We used to ride out with her sitting on the back. I had worshiped her from afar for quite a while, it had been love at first sight for me. She was a little bit older and very popular so I didn’t think I stood a chance. Things went well for a couple of months and then she moved away. We wrote a couple of times but then lost touch. Then 2 years ago she walked into my local pub, the minute I saw her it was love all over again. We have been together ever since and are getting married next summer. We both listen to your show, it takes us both back to a great time. So Tim could you play - first time ever I saw your face - for my seventies bird, she is my best friend and I have loved her from the first time I laid eyes on her...keep the tunes coming.

I would love to hear "It's In His Kiss" by Linda Lewis from 1975 as I remember hearing it in the back garden of our house in Alsager one hot summer Sunday afternoon when I was 7 & were assured of proper summers then.

Hi Tim...I stumbled on the show after searching the BBC for 70's sounds and have been an avid listener for the past couple of months. There is now a small group of us expats here that tune in at our desks via the 'listen again' button on Tuesday mornings.Just want to say keep playing the great sounds!

Hi Tim,I've sent you a message before and you played some folk for me. I just wanted to say how good it was to hear Don McCleans Castles in the air. I was suddenly transported to The London Road Tavern folk club where I first heard that song in the 70s. Keep up the good work!!

Ahhhh...'Forever and Ever' by Demis Roussos. How evocative to hear that one once again. It's always associated with the long hot summer of '76, but I'm sure it was actually around and a hit across Europe 3 years previously in '73. I have clear memories of hearing it on distant foreign LW/MW stations ages before it hit here. As ever, keep up the good work Tim. How about 'It's Raining' (Darts) 'Just for You (Alan Price) If poss? Thanks.

MICHAEL EARITH
DEAR TIMI think it's time we heard "FOREVER & EVER by DEMIS ROUSSOS again as I recall first hearing this when stopped to by Petrol at a Texaco filling Station one Sunday sunny afternoon somewhere again during that baking summer of 76.Many ThanksYour,s FaithfullyM W EARITH

I think "Turn The Music Up" by "The Player's Association belongs on a "Surfin The 70s" show, which was the only hit for the group in early 1979,as too does Shirley Bassey's version of (Where do I begin)Love Story.
