| Tendulkar back up the list Gilchrist leads Tendulkar by 29 points Sachin Tendulkar's battling 86 in India's defeat in Jamaica has pushed him a little closer to recovering his mantle as the world's best batsman. That is according to the latest Test world rankings announced by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Tendulkar has moved from fourth to second equal, where he joins Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq. But Adam Gilchrist, Australia's wicket-keeper who never bats higher than seven, still reigns supreme on 881 points, with a Test average of exactly 60. Mahela Jayawardene is fourth on his own, following his fine century at Lord's, while Brian Lara's indifferent form has seen him slump from second to fifth. In the bowling, Andy Caddick's poor showing at Lord's saw him drop out of the top 10, from seventh to 11th. Meanwhile, former Australian captain Kim Hughes said Gilchrist, 30, would be the only present-day player to feature in a best-ever line-up. Hughes ranks Gilchrist alongside fellow Aussies Don Bradman and Dennis Lillee and the West Indies' Garfield Sobers, as certainties in the best-ever line-up, Hughes said. "I consider these are the only four who would qualify automatically for a best Test eleven of all time," said Hughes. |
