Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento is set to miss the start of pre-season after his World Cup was ended by a calf injury.

The full-back has had surgery after pulling up in training just three days before England's group opener against Croatia on 17 June.

Following an assessment, England's medical team estimated Livramento would be out for about four or five weeks.

Manager Thomas Tuchel, as a result, called up Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah in his place.

"I was very disappointed and very sad," Tuchel said at the time. "All of us were.

"It was a little shock in training when he stopped training and he straight away had the feeling that this could be an injury that costs him the tournament and, unfortunately, he was right."

Livramento has since had a minor surgical procedure and Newcastle expect the 23-year-old to return to action at some point this summer.

Newcastle's non-internationals are due back at the training ground for testing on 13 July.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes provided the assist for Gabriel Martinelli's dramatic 95th-minute winner as Brazil beat Japan 2-1 to progress into the last 16 of the World Cup.

Guimaraes has the most assists in the tournament and is now responsible for setting up four of Brazil's nine goals so far.

The Guimaraes-created winner, clocked at 95:00, is the latest winning goal in normal time of the knockout stages of the World Cup on record (since 1966).

  5. Newcastle duo contribute to Premier League World Cup dominancepublished at 10:07 BST 29 June

    Mohamed Moallim

    Media caption,

There is a wider picture of Premier League dominance at the World Cup. A total of 182 players connected to Premier League clubs - including returning loanees and players already signed before the 2026-27 season - were selected for the tournament, comfortably more than any other domestic league.

Restricting the count to players who ended last season registered with Premier League clubs still leaves an unrivalled total of 154.

The English top flight's influence has not merely been measured by representation. Its players have consistently delivered decisive moments, with goals arriving from title challengers, European hopefuls and mid-table clubs alike.

Across world football, only players from Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain have scored more goals than Crystal Palace and Sunderland's seven during the tournament so far.

Three clubs are tied next with five goals, including Newcastle United, thanks to Yoane Wissa's three goals for DR Congo and Anthony Elanga's two for Sweden.

Arsenal's contribution comes courtesy of Kai Havertz (Germany) and Leandro Trossard (Belgium), who have both scored twice, alongside Viktor Gyokeres (Sweden).

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha has three goals for Brazil, with Marcus Rashford (England) and Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) also getting on the scoresheet.

Premier League clubs ranked by World Cup goals:

    7: Crystal Palace, Sunderland

5: Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle United

    4: Liverpool, Manchester City

    3: Wolves

    2: Brighton, West Ham

    1: Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham

  6. Newcastle have to signal some form of ambition againpublished at 16:53 BST 26 June

The transfer window has not long been open, but some of the Premier League's highest-earning clubs have their eyes on Newcastle's best players.

Tottenham have already made an unsuccessful opening offer for Sandro Tonali, while Arsenal hold an interest in the Italian as well as fellow midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Tonali is a key player at Newcastle, but it is hard to overstate Guimaraes' importance - the Brazilian really is this team's heartbeat.

Last season was a bruising domestic campaign, one in which Newcastle finished a disappointing 12th in the Premier League, but Guimaraes tellingly still emerged with some credit as the club's player of the year.

The midfielder repeatedly popped up with openers, equalisers and winners in his best ever goalscoring season (nine).

Newcastle, understandably, don't want to lose him.

They had to become better sellers, but simply cannot afford for Guimaraes, Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak to depart in the space of just a year.

What sort of message would that send?

After missing out on Spain international forward Victor Munoz, who opted to join Liverpool, Newcastle need a breakthrough of their own in the transfer market.

They have to signal some form of ambition again - not least to the players they currently have.

  7. 'That's come out of nowhere!' Elanga secures Sweden last-32 spotpublished at 08:38 BST 26 June

    Media caption,

Anthony Elanga became the first Sweden international to score in consecutive World Cup matches since Martin Dahlin and Kennet Andersson in 1994, having curled in a stunner to earn a point against Japan.

The Newcastle United winger's goal from 28.9 metres out is the second-longest scored by a Sweden international at a World Cup since records began in 1966 - only beaten by Anders Svensson's goal from 30.9m against Argentina in 2002.

A 1-1 draw for Graham Potter's side at Dallas Stadium meant they finished third in Group F on four points and secured a spot in the last 32, however Elanga was seen looking frustrated at full-time, seemingly confused over what his team needed to progress to the knockout stages.

In his post-match news conference, Potter said: "It couldn't have been any clearer so he was obviously thinking about something else, bless him.

"I love him at the moment, but dear me!"

  8. Guimaraes continues fine form for Brazilpublished at 09:58 BST 25 June

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes maintained his impressive form on the international stage as he racked up a sixth goal involvement in his past 11 games for Brazil by providing two assists in the 3-0 win over Scotland at the World Cup.

His assists for Vinicius Jr and Matheus Cunha helped his side wrap up the three points and secure top spot in Group C.

Since 2022, the Magpies midfielder has assisted his Brazil team-mates more than anyone else (11) and only Kaka has also provided multiple assists in the same World Cup match for the Selecao in the 21st Century.

We asked you which players you have watched at the World Cup that you think would be a great fit at Newcastle.

Here are some of your comments:

Ben: Verbruggen would be a great addition as a first choice goalkeeper is a must. Swedens Ayari would be good for the future and would work well with Elanga. Trossard to replace Gordon, Newcastle missed out on him once and think they'd regret missing out again. He's definitely still capable if he's given the game time he needs. All three are realistic and look great value for money... Yeremy Pino would also be a great addition to the attacking line whatever position he'd play.

John: The Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was outstanding against Belgium. He's known as the Wall of Persia and holds the Guinness record for long throws. Shame he's 33 - we should have signed him years ago.

Darren: Johan Manzambi - still only 20 and has a cracking shot on him.

Graeme: Nmecha from Germany, ideal Tonali replacement.

  10. Rice out and Rogers in? The England starting XI questions for Tuchelpublished at 14:35 BST 24 June

Thomas Tuchel walks out of the tunnelImage source, Getty Images

Despite still feeling "massively optimistic" about Thomas Tuchel's chances of being successful as England manager, former Three Lions defender Stephen Warnock has been left "surprised" with some of his selection decisions.

England were held to a goalless draw by Ghana at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night, knowing that victory would have confirmed a place in the World Cup's last 32.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily, Warnock said: "More than anything, I was surprised Nico O'Reilly didn't start in the left-back position because when you have a right-footed left-back, you lose that little bit of balance on the pitch.

"You can see the difference when O'Reilly comes on, England get more bodies into the box and it causes chaos.

"I've seen a clip of Declan Rice getting onto the team bus with a heavily strapped calf, so it might be that Thomas Tuchel rests one of his two central midfielders and goes for more attacking-minded players next time out.

"I wouldn't mind seeing Harry Kane through the middle with Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers either side of him, as either two number eights or two number 10s.

"It also wouldn't surprise me if he starts Marcus Rashford on the left-hand side as his cameos so far have been hugely impressive. When you're looking for a player to get in behind or get in 1-v-1 situations, he has been key.

"Noni Madueke did very well in the first half, but I was surprised Tuchel didn't bring Rashford on a little bit earlier. Giving a player 10 minutes in a game like that just isn't enough.

"Djed Spence, who is playing with the wrong foot constantly, was also playing very predictable balls to Anthony Gordon, which was making it very difficult for him to find the space or get in behind.

"I understood why Tuchel picked Spence initially, but I thought he was taking him as a right-back not a left-back. Right now, I can't understand how Lewis Hall isn't in this squad. It is nothing against Spence, I just don't think left-back suits him.

"That being said, I am still massively optimistic with this manager."

  11. 'It's all about getting the right deal' - Anderson on Tonali and transferspublished at 13:38 BST 24 June

    Media caption,

Newcastle will be better off selling Sandro Tonali this summer, says former Magpie John Anderson.

Newcastle rejected an initial offer worth £80m from Tottenham for the Italian midfielder last week - having demanded a fee closer to £100m - but Anderson thinks there is an air of inevitability to the transfer.

"It has that 'Anthony Gordon feel' to it, doesn't it? To a certain degree," Anderson told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I think everybody accepted the fact that Gordon was going to go and you just get that same vibe about Tonali. I know there's been a lot of talk about Tottenham and why he would go there with them having finished 17th in the last two seasons, but it's all about getting the right deal isn't it?

"We stood by Tonali in his first season here when he had the problems with the gambling situation but again, if you've got a player who doesn't want to be at your football club and he doesn't want to play for you, you're better off [letting him go]."

But it isn't just player retention that Anderson is worried about.

Newcastle were in talks for Spanish youngster Victor Munoz when the summer transfer window opened, but it was a familiar thorn in Liverpool who beat them to his signature, and Anderson believes there is an overarching recruitment problem at the club.

"They need to do something to get players in. This is the second time this has happened where we thought we had a deal done," Anderson said.

"The James Trafford one springs to mind last season where it dragged on and dragged on, and everybody thought it was a deal that was going to be done and all of a sudden he ends up going back to Manchester City - and now he's another one who has been linked back.

"We said at the back end of last season, they need to do deals and they just need to go and get them done. Go get them done and say 'we've signed this player' but the problem is everything is played out in the press – whether that's a deliberate ploy by the agents to get other clubs interested I do not know – but recruitment needs to be better."

  12. Newcastle cannot afford for transfer history to repeat itselfpublished at 13:11 BST 24 June

    Newcastle United reporter

Eddie Howe talks to Sandro TonaliImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa's 2024-25 end-of-season awards dinner was in full swing when Damian Vidagany took to the stage.

"There is no big six anymore," he declared to loud cheers 12 months ago - and such a sentiment will have plenty of support on Tyneside.

Just as Aston Villa disrupted the established order to qualify for the Champions League in 2024 and 2026, so too did Newcastle United in 2023 and 2025.

Yet the league's highest-earning clubs have hardly withered in the face of the challenge from outside the six, and Tottenham's pursuit of midfielder Sandro Tonali is a reminder of that.

Newcastle have had to become better sellers following years of imbalanced trading, but it still feels a world away from the feeling around the club going into last summer.

Eddie Howe and his players had not long ended a 70-year wait to win a major domestic trophy by defeating Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, but they had also secured Champions League football for the second time in three seasons.

They had a degree of financial headroom again following several windows of relative parsimony, yet it was still a struggle for them to land their top targets - let alone keep hold of their top players.

"It was very difficult to attract the players that we wanted, that we felt could really make a difference to the team," Howe said last month. "I certainly don't think that challenge is going to be easier. It is going to be harder."

    Those words proved rather prophetic.

Newcastle managed to sign highly-rated goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims for £18.5m before the window even officially opened.

However, just when it appeared they were in pole position to land top target Victor Munoz, the winger joined Liverpool from Osasuna.

It felt like Groundhog Day for supporters after Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, James Trafford and Benjamin Sesko opted to move to Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United respectively last summer.

The club cannot afford for history to repeat itself, but it is easy to forget the window only opened on 15 June.

Aston Villa's 2024-25 end-of-season awards dinner was in full swing when Damian Vidagany took to the stage.

The director of football operations had a message for Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Yet the league's highest-earning clubs have hardly withered in the face of the challenge from outside the six, and Spurs' pursuit of midfielder Sandro Tonali is a reminder of that.

Just weeks after Roberto de Zerbi's side narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season, they are trying to lure one of Newcastle's best players to North London.

Newcastle hardly had a stellar season themselves - finishing a disappointing 12th place - but the difference is Spurs have greater revenues to fall back on as they try to bounce back come August.

Their most recent financial accounts showed they had generated £230m more in income than Newcastle in 2024-25. As a result, they could offer far superior wages to Tonali and make a meaty bid of about £80m for the Italy midfielder, yet stay within the game's financial rules.

  14. Could Newcastle go back in for Trafford?published at 09:06 BST 24 June

    Ciaran Kelly
    Football reporter

It's the ultimate shop window: a World Cup with 48 teams - all packed with players eager to show what they can do on the biggest stage.

With the transfer window now open, BBC Sport journalists have been taking a look at some of the key names being discussed.

England goalkeeper James TraffordImage source, Getty Images

The prospect of Newcastle making a third attempt to sign England goalkeeper James Trafford in just three years has not been ruled out.

Although he did not feature in England's opener against Croatia, it was significant that on the eve of the game the Manchester City goalkeeper accepted he will need to be first choice at club level to fulfil his dream of being his country's number one.

That could yet work in Newcastle's favour if they are to return to the table for Manchester City's cup keeper.

  16. Newcastle confirm new front-of-shirt sponsorpublished at 17:47 BST 23 June

    Ciaran Kelly
    Newcastle United reporter

Newcastle United have announced a new front-of-shirt sponsor in what chief executive David Hopkinson has called a "transformative" deal.

The club, as expected, have signed a three-year contract with sports drink company Knox Hydrate, who were already due to become their training ground naming rights partner.

"This is a transformative deal for Newcastle United," Hopkinson said.

"Knox is an explosive, innovative brand that perfectly matches our ambition and shares our long-term vision for global success."

Supporters who have bought the club's home shirt will be able to get the new sponsor applied after the kit went on sale before the agreement was announced.

  17. Is there a sell-on clause for Anderson?published at 12:10 BST 23 June

    Ciaran Kelly
    Newcastle United reporter

Elliot Anderson plays for Nottingham Forest against Newcastle and pursues Sandro Tonali

Some of you have been using our Newcastle Ask Me Anything form to query if there's a sell-on clause for Elliot Anderson, after Manchester City made firm bids for the ex-Newcastle midfielder, now at Nottingham Forest.

As far as I'm aware Newcastle would not stand to benefit financially if Anderson left Nottingham Forest.

The club do not have a buy-back option, either.

Ordinarily these clauses would be negotiated during the sale of promising young players, as sides like Manchester City and Chelsea have over the years.

But Newcastle had no bargaining position whatsoever when they sold Anderson to Nottingham Forest in 2024.

The club were desperately attempting to raise funds to avoid a breach of profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and a likely points deduction.

Anderson's subsequent journey to becoming an England starter has been bittersweet for Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe.

Although Anderson has felt the clear benefit of increased game time at Nottingham Forest, Newcastle's backroom staff always believed he was destined for the very top and hoped he could realise his vast potential while playing for his boyhood club.

The midfielder still has huge admirers at all levels at St James' Park, including sporting director Ross Wilson, who helped bring him to Nottingham Forest during his time at the City Ground.

But Anderson appears destined to move elsewhere rather than return to Tyneside.
