From nail-biting finishes to potential future stars - Aaron McLean's EFL takeaways

Former Peterborough United and Hull City striker turned Final Score pundit Aaron McLean gives his five takeaways from across the Championship, League One and League Two after an enthralling day of EFL action.

Second-placed Ipswich missed the chance to edge closer to an immediate return to the Premier League after they were held 0-0 at West Brom. The result means four teams remain in the hunt for the Championship's second automatic promotion place.

McLean: "It was a big day for Ipswich. If they could have beat West Brom that would have given them daylight, especially after seeing Millwall slip up at Leicester.

"It opens the door for Southampton. We have got the big game coming up on Tuesday - Southampton will be confident that if they can get a win in that game they could be the team that pips Ipswich to second place."

Paul Warne sealed the fifth promotion of his managerial career as his MK Dons side beat Tranmere Rovers 3-0 to return to the third tier after a three-year absence. The Dons are also in the driving seat to go up as champions heading into the final day.

McLean: "It's a brilliant achievement for Paul Warne. He was brought in to get MK Dons promoted and he's done exactly that. Before a ball was kicked they were the favourites and it's taken until the penultimate game for them to reach the top of the league, but you would fancy them to go on and win it now.

"You have to credit them, given they weren't performing early in the season to the level that everyone would have expected, but still they had enough about them to be able to come through.

"They probably haven't reached their potential but at the end of the day they have got the job done."

The battle to avoid dropping out of the Football League will go to the final day, with five clubs - Barrow, Harrogate, Newport, Crawley and Tranmere - still at risk of relegation after yet more twists, turns and last-minute winners.

McLean: "Today was such a big day for Newport. With them playing Barrow on the final day I think it was imperative that they got something against Oldham.

"Today's win almost gives them a little bit of a cushion. They are the big winners today, coming away with three points in the fashion they did after missing the penalty.

"Next weekend you would expect Harrogate to have a tough game against Barnet. Crawley playing Salford, who are going for automatic promotion, will also be tough for them."

York City left it more than a little late to seal their return to the EFL after a 10-year absence. It was almost certainly the most dramatic finish to a National League season there has ever been.

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe looked to have sent Rochdale up via the division's sole automatic promotion place with a goal five minutes into injury time, only for Josh Stones to equalise with 103 minutes on the clock.

McLean: "They have got a great chance back in the EFL, they have got great backing in terms of the owners. It was so important that they got automatic promotion and the fashion they did it in, they almost did a Rochdale to Rochdale.

"Rochdale had got late winners in their last few games and it looked like it would happen again. It's an incredible achievement for Stuart Maynard, taking over the team and going on an incredible run to finish as champions."

Despite Oxford's disappointment at dropping back into League One - which was confirmed before they kicked a ball today - Spurs loanee Will Lankshear underlined his credentials as one to watch with a brace in the Yellows' 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

The England youth international has hit 12 goals this term and could be playing for his parent club in the second tier next season.

McLean: "He's a terrific player. He's on loan from Spurs, so he's got good pedigree. Getting a full season under your belt and doing as well as he has, I expect to see a lot more of him.

"Even though he's in a team that's got relegated, I think he's will take so much from this season - and he's got better as the season has gone on.

"He's an exciting young prospect."
