Gary Boyle: Newry City manager resigns after 4-0 defeat by Glenavon

Gary Boyle has resigned as Newry City boss after they were thumped 4-0 by Glenavon on Boxing Day.

Boyle replaced Darren Mullen as manager in May but Newry are currently bottom of the Irish Premiership.

"That's my last game as Newry City manager. I will be wishing the club well going forward," said Boyle.

"I'm really disappointed it hasn't worked out. I've been here a long time and enjoyed some good times and some tough times."

The defeat by Glenavon at the Showgrounds on Tuesday afternoon leaves City three points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Newry have won just three of their 23 league matches this season and recorded 17 defeats.

"The club has never turned on their own and I felt in the last couple months there has been a lot of stuff directed obviously at me but it's now seeping onto the pitch and the players.

"I'm absolutely gutted. Football has played a huge part in what has been a really difficult personal time for me and my family.

"My family were here today and the intention is to bring them onto the pitch after and I didn't feel that it was appropriate to do that.

"I think for the betterment of the club to try galvanise it again that maybe there's new figurehead that leads it going forward," admitted Boyle.

"It's a decision based solely after the game [against Glenavon]- it's disappointing the results haven't been good enough and certainly I want the club to do well.

"It's a special club, but at the end of the day the club, is punching above their weight and the ultimate goal is to stay in the Premiership and I'm hopeful that whoever comes in can still achieve that goal."
