Greechan looks to future after Guernsey defeat

Jersey's Taylor Greechan hopes his experience at Glasgow 2026 can help him in future Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old was beaten by Guernsey's Jason Greenslade in their penultimate match of the men's singles bowls.

Greenslade came from a shot down to win the first set 5-4 in the battle of the Channel Islands.

The former World Indoor champion - who won fours bronze with Wales in 2002 - raced into a 7-0 lead after three ends of the second set.

Greechan did recover but could not overhaul the Guernseyman as he won 8-4.

"At the end of the day all experience is good experience," Greechan told BBC Jersey.

"It's my first Commonwealth Games, so it was always going to be tough.

"I had high hopes, but it hasn't happened unfortunately, but life goes on.

"I've just got to keep plugging away, keep doing it. If I get to India in 2030 then I can bring this experience forward, see what I did right and what I did wrong."

Greechan went on to lose his final game to Australian group winner Aaron Wilson 8-5, 7-5 to finish second-from-bottom of the group with one win and six defeats.

Greenslade will set his sights on the men's pairs after his singles quest comes to an end.

He came close to beating Australia's group leader Aaron Wilson in his opening game - a result which had a big impact on his chances of topping the group and making the knockout stages.

But he is glad he got one over Greechan for island pride.

"I think to win any game at this level it is special, but certainly to beat our neighbours it is extra extra special," he said.

"Our team's a good team. We just need to play well, we need to be more consistent and maybe just get those breaks and then we've got every chance of getting a medal."

Greenslade went on to end his singles campaign with a tie-break win over Isle of Man's Mark McGreal to finish third in his group.

Alison Merrien and Rose Ogier bought their pairs campaign to a close after beating winless Niue Island.

The duo cruised to a 10-1 win in the first set before drawing the second 4-4 to win 1.5-0.5.

The finish third in their group on shots difference after pool winners Northern Ireland were beaten by Australia - the Ulster pair went through by just a single shot after all three sides had won five of their six matches.

Merrien will begin her women's singles campaign on Tuesday.

Jersey women's pair Sara Douglas and Fiona Archibald ended their Commonwealth Games campaign with an impressive victory over winless Falkland Islands.

The duo raced into a 5-0 lead after two legs of the first set and held out for a 5-3 victory.

The second set was even better as they went 7-0 up after three ends and added a further five shots in the final two ends to win it 12-0.

The result means the pair finished fourth in their group.
