Olympic medallists pull out of England athletics team

Sprinter Louie Hinchliffe and 400m runner Charlie Dobson have withdrawn from England's athletics team one day before the competition begins at the Commonwealth Games.

Both runners won bronze medals in relay events at the 2024 Paris Olympics but now will not feature in Glasgow's track and field competition, which starts on Monday.

Nine English athletes, including Olympic silver medallist Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dina Asher-Smith, had already withdrawn.

England's only remaining sprinter in the 100m heats is Elliot Jones, who has a personal best of 10.04 seconds.

Jones will also run in the 4x100m men's relay alongside Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, Romell Glave and Ebuka Nwokeji.

Dobson was not due to participate in the men's 400m race but was part of the mixed 4x400m relay squad.

Matthew Hudson-Smith, who won Olympic silver in Paris, had also already dropped out, meaning the squad is currently made up of Laviai Nielsen, Poppy Malik, Alicia Regis, Louise Evans and Toby Harries.
