Emery on Watkins, VAR and 'creating history' at Villa

  • Published

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has been speaking to the media before Thursday's Europa Conference League meeting with Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

  • Emery confirmed that Boubacar Kamara and Moussa Diaby will not feature on Thursday and are both doubts to face Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday.

  • He also confirmed that Leon Bailey is back in training and available to face Zrinjski Mostar after recovering from a thigh strain.

  • When asked about the recent form of Ollie Watkins, Emery said: "His commitment with the club is really great. He is always ready to learn, he's still humble to work hard and to get better always. When he's not scoring he's always working well. He's closer to go with the national team because he started the season very good."

  • When asked about his history of success in European competition, Emery said: "We have our experience, but we want to create new history here."

  • On European football returning to Villa Park: "The support is very important, we have to be strong at Villa Park."

  • On the recent VAR controversy: "I'm always positive with VAR. I think it is good for football. I think it helps the referee always. Sometimes you can have a mistake, like in the Tottenham v Liverpool game, but I can understand that. I can accept sometimes they are making a mistake, but normally, usually, they are working very well."
