The United States and Venezuela have welcomed a big energy deal which they've formally signed in Caracas, along with a series of agreements involving international oil firms. Critics say the deal hands Washington control of a fifth of Venezuela’s oil reserves, which are the world's largest, and entrenches the current authoritarian government. Activists say the real death toll in Tibet, following catastrophic flash floods along the country's border with Nepal, is higher than the official figure given by the Chinese authorities. Survivors of a police shooting in apartheid- era South Africa are launching a new push for justice, more than six decades after what became known as the Sharpeville massacre.
