Donald Macleod traces Smith’s writing of her Second Symphony for a competition at the Alexandra Palace. Smith decided not to submit her work by the deadline, and in conversation with guests Ian Graham-Jones and Leanne Langley, Macleod surveys the composer’s symphonic development, and explores why the Alexandra Palace launched this competition.
