In this episode, Jamz Supernova travels to the Indian Ocean to explore the sounds of the Mascarene Islands, focusing on traditional genres like maloya and séga, which are rooted in histories of slavery, rebellion, and Creole identity. She learns how contemporary artists are pushing these percussive rhythms into new and innovative directions, from ritual gatherings called Kabar to the distorted, futuristic edges of “electronic maloya.” Jamz speaks with legendary figure Danyèl Waro, pioneering experimentalist Jako Maron, as well as Mauritius-based Babani Records and others from the region and throughout the diaspora.
