In Jamz Supernova’s Global Sounds, Jamz delves into the heartbeat of musical scenes across the globe. Across this four-part series, Jamz explores global sounds from Uganda (tracing the evolution of electronic Kadodi and Uganda’s experimental club movements), Brazil (delving deeper into Brazilian Funk and the alternative sounds pushing things forward), and the Pacific Islands (spotlighting contemporary artists from Aotearoa to Tahiti, and from Tonga to Samoa redefining tradition). In this episode, Jamz explores Japan’s electronic underground, where club culture, experimental production, and DJing are having a special moment. From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the raw energy of Osaka’s dance floors, Jamz uncovers the alternative communities shaping Japan’s global influence in electronic music. Jamz catches up with Boiler Room Tokyo curator, DJ, and artist manager Sinta, who shares all from the import of Global Club Sounds into Japan, the unique characteristics which form Japanese DJ styles, the cohesion of rap and club culture as well as the challenges club culture has faced in recent years. We also celebrate two years of the successful Boiler Room: Tokyo series and hear from Riria on her recent experience performing at the latest event. Plus, UK-born, Osaka-based DJ and promoter Frankie $ gives insight into the comparisons between club culture in the UK/London and Japan while suggesting some exciting artists to look out for in the latter. Also, Berlin-based DJ and producer Akiko Kiyama examines the philosophies that make up the traditional Japanese approaches to electronic music composition, and TREKKIE TRAX rapper Nakamura Minami recites how she became tapped into the UK dance music continuum.
