Richard Angwin, BBC West weatherman, says: "A weather front down to the southwest is expected to run up against the very cold air that has been over the country for several days. "We expect there to be a period, of as little as three or four hours, when the snow will fall quite heavily." Snow will begin to fall over Somerset soon after midnight on Thursday morning (8 February 2007). Southern parts of the county may see relatively small amounts with as little as 1 to 3cm expected to affect Crewkerne, Chard and Yeovil. Taunton may see 3 or 4cm, but the biggest falls are likely to be over NE Somerset and the Mendips. General falls of 4 to 8cm are predicted but falls in excess of 10cm could fall on the Mendips. Along the coast there may be little more than a couple of centimetres. Even if major routes are relatively clear, minor and estate roads are likely to be treacherous for much of the morning. Once the snow has stopped falling there will be a very slow thaw, but it will take a day or so before the snow finally clears from the fields.
