Review: A Talent to Amuse

Mike Elliott
A Talent to Amuse was performed at Strode Theatre in Street on 14 January, 2006. BBC Somerset reviewer Mike Elliott went along to check it out.

Fours Company presented an evening with a difference in this satirical work, written by the great Noel Coward.

It featured music by Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter and, even, The Beatles.

Proceeds from this well-attended performance were donated to the Ian Ritchie Foundation, which supports young people in the performing arts.

The company, which included two ladies and two gentlemen, was obviously "of a certain age", however this did not detract from the fact that they were very talented singers and performers.

As a throwback from the 1960s era of mods and rockers, I am constantly amazed to hear the lyrics of Lennon and McCartney performed in semi-classical fashion.

And they said it would never last! Rock on! I am still desperately seeking maturity - I feel that perhaps I should give up hope.

Certainly, performances like this open up a totally new spectrum of entertainment to me. Friends from way back when find it difficult to believe that I watch - and enjoy - relatively high-brow entertainment such A Talent to Amuse.
