The Oswestry and District Agricultural Society has held a show almost every year since 1862, prevented only by two world wars and foot and mouth. The 2008 show opens at 9am on Saturday 2 August on the Park Hall showground and continues until 6pm.

Traditional livestock competitions are presented alongside stalls and ring entertainment, including the Royal Artillery Flying Gunners Motorcycle Display Team and the Jive Pony duo, specialising in horseback gymnastics.

The farming industry has faced a number of problems over recent years, from foot and mouth to bluetongue, increased cost of grain and struggling dairy prices. However Oswestry Show hopes to show off excellence in the local farming community - this year's programme features categories for horses, cattle, sheep, rare breeds, goats and poultry.

Other attractions on the day include craft exhibits, stalls, horticultural shows and a food hall showing off some of the best local produce. There is also formation riding and entertainment for younger visitors.

BBC Radio Shropshire

BBC Radio Shropshire's Alan Wilding and his gardening team will be at the show this year and they'll be on-hand to offer their expert advice to help you get the best results in your garden.

Location and parking

The Oswestry Show Ground is at Park Hall just off the A495. Which is about 30 minutes from Chester and about 25 minutes from Shrewsbury. There is parking available at the ground.
