Scientists uncover evidence of an ancient supervolcano beneath The Wash.
Evidence has been discovered of an ancient supervolcano beneath The Wash off the Lincolnshire coast.
Analysis of rock samples from deep boreholes at Claxby in South Lincolnshire and North Creake in Norfolk suggests it erupted around 454 million years ago.
Dr Tim Pharaoh from the British Geological Survey and Volcanologist Prof Jenni Barclay say the discovery reveals a dramatic chapter in Britain's geological past.
