Nigeria’s New Education Reform
The Nigerian government is proposing a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education model aimed at reducing school dropouts and improving retention.
This comes as the country continues to grapple with an estimated 18.3 million out-of-school children, driven by poverty, insecurity, child labour, early marriage and other variables.
Gist Nigeria’s Sarah Ayeku examines whether the latest reform can address the root causes of the education crisis, or simply rearrange a system burdened by deeper social and economic challenges.
