First confirmed capture of Greater Horseshoe Bat in Jersey
The Jersey Bat Group held a capture/release session in St Peter’s Valley targeting the Greater Horseshoe Bat on the 24th May 2026. At 23:30, one of their mist nets finally produced an adult male Greater Horseshoe Bat — the first confirmed capture of the species in Jersey.
As Greater Horseshoe Bats are known to be particularly difficult bats to catch, this represents a very significant record for the island and an important addition to our understanding of Jersey’s bat fauna.
Alison spoke to Miranda Collett, training officer for the Jersey Bat Group, about this exciting development.
