Wakefield's world first nature reserve at 200

In 1826 naturalist Charles Waterton created the very first nature reserve in Wakefield.

In 1826 local naturalist Charles Waterton created the very first nature reserve. Following a trip to South America, the local naturalist was inspired to do his bit to preserve nature in the Wakefield area. He successfully walled-off his estate, and in doing so created the world’s first nature reserve. Now that very wall is in danger of being lost due to erosion and lack of repair. Gayle Lofthouse spoke to John Whittaker from The Friends Of Waterton's Wall about the history of the area and the man who created it.
