Althea Gibson

Althea Gibson was the first person of colour to win a Grand Slam title. She recalls how an article by Alice Mable, a former tennis No. 1, in the American Lawn Tennis magazine aided her introduction to the big tournaments by lambasting the sport for denying a player of Gibson's calibre to compete. The article was a turning point and in 1951 Gibson made history when she became the first African-American to be invited to play at Wimbledon. She talks about overcoming the racism and her key to her sporting success.
