The choice that unearthed school trauma
After feeling traumatised by boarding school, Cathy vowed never to send her own children… until her daughter asked to go.
For young Cathy Wield, boarding school was a time of trauma: she was a literal world away from her parents, being cared for by people she says showed little compassion.
She vowed never to send her own children. Years later however, her own daughter was offered a place at a prestigious boarding school for ballet.
It was a dream come true – but Cathy faced a choice: should she say yes or no, knowing what her own experience was like?
Speaking to Dr Sian Williams, Cathy reveals how that decision unlocked years of traumatic memories, with devastating effects.
