The Chapel of Merton College, Oxford
Bells on Sunday comes from the Chapel of Merton College, Oxford.
Bells on Sunday comes from the Chapel of Merton College, Oxford. Founded in the mid-13th Century the College’s Chapel replaced an earlier church. The tower was completed circa 1450 and houses eight bells cast by Christopher Hodson in 1680, the oldest surviving complete ring of eight bells all by one founder. The tenor weighs twenty-four hundredweight and is tuned to E flat. The bells are rung from a gallery mounted sixty foot up on the walls inside the tower with a large opening in the centre and views directly down to the ground. We hear them ringing Merton College Alliance Major.
