Could My Shyness Rub Off on My 4-Year-Old? - Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges

Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges is secretly shy. Could she pass her social anxiety to her 4-year-old? She faces her fears and gets a child psychologist's tips for shy parents. Part 1.

Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges is secretly shy. She can DJ in front of a crowd of 30,000, yet dropping her daughter at the school gate fills her with terror.

As the parent of a four year old, Charlie is worried her social anxiety could be passed on to her little girl, and she is determined not to let her own shyness shape her daughter's confidence. She believes she inherited it from her mum, who is still too shy to appear on camera.

We meet the rest of Charlie's close family: her taxi driver dad Terry, and her brother Alex, who also manages her career. Together they look back on Charlie's childhood to work out what lies behind her confidence issues.

Then Charlie faces her fears head on, taking her daughter to a Stay and Play and forcing herself to talk to the other parents. Afterwards she debriefs with child psychologist Laverne Antrobus, who explains what is happening to Charlie emotionally and shares practical tips any anxious parent can use in the moment.

The real test comes when manager Alex books Charlie for an appearance that matters hugely to her and her daughter, and she has to put her new techniques for managing anxiety into practice for real.
