It’s the first quarter-final, and the four chefs who have fought their way through the heats return to the kitchen with everything to play for. Their next challenge is to prove that they can raise their game once again as they battle for one of just 12 places in knockout week. The competition is about to get serious.

First up, the chefs face the invention test. Under their mystery boxes on their benches is a surprise key ingredient that must take centre stage in their dish - coconut, an ingredient that can bring richness, sweetness and depth, but one that demands balance and precision to get right. The larder is packed with an impressive assortment of ingredients, from fish and chocolate to an array of pastry, giving the chefs endless possibilities to make the coconut sing.

But the challenge doesn’t end there. The chefs must cook for two of the country’s most discerning food critics, William Sitwell and Xanthe Clay, alongside new face, chef and writer Rahel Stephanie. Each chef must deliver their best two-course meal, showcasing originality and technical skill. With the standard higher than ever, every plate needs to make an impression.

With their verdicts in, Monica and Marcus must make the final call. For some chefs, the critics’ reactions could strengthen their case; for others, they could expose the smallest weaknesses. With only three places in knockout week up for grabs, who has done enough to stay in the competition, and whose MasterChef journey ends here?
