Deep Dive: Setting the stage for everyday Muslim stories

Peanut Butter and Blueberries is about two Muslims finding love. For writer Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan and Leeds Playhouse CEO Shawab Iqbal, depicting everyday Muslim lives is crucial.

When you think of a love story, a peanut butter and blueberry sandwich might not be the first thing that that comes to mind. But in a new production at Leeds Playhouse, it's the start of an unexpected connection.

The play follows Hafsah and Bilal, two Muslim students living away from home in London, as they navigate love and the social realities around them.

After a sell-out run at London's Kiln Theatre, the show is coming to Leeds and for its writer, poet Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, it's also a homecoming to her childhood city.

Suhaiymah joins Amber Haque alongside Shawab Iqbal, chief executive of Leeds Playhouse, to talk about bringing the story to the stage, challenging Muslim stereotypes and making the arts more inclusive. Suhaiymah also explains why Peanut Butter and Blueberries isn't a 'Muslim love story', but a love story, that just happens to be about Muslims.
