
Celebrating pioneering black musicians in British jazz
This week ‘Round Midnight celebrates some of the pioneering black musicians in British jazz featured in the V&A East's immersive exhibition 'The Music is Black'.
This week, ‘Round Midnight joins in on the BBC’s The Music Is Black season, in collaboration with the V&A East in London. The museum’s current exhibition of the same name explores 125 years of Black music in Britain.
From Monday to Thursday, Soweto spotlights some of the many pioneering black musicians who helped to shape the course of jazz in Britain. Tonight, he looks to the early 20th century to three influential figures who were notably prominent in the 1930s and 1940s - Leslie "Jiver" Hutchinson, Ken “Snakehips” Johnson, and Bertie King.
