Eric Knowles mistakes a courtroom for the saleroom when he learns about an important date in British legal history. At the National Justice Museum, he speaks to the oldest son of the late Eric Irons, who was appointed as the UK’s first black magistrate in 1962. In the very courtroom in which Eric Irons presided, son Paul explains how his father came to Britain from Jamaica in World War II, where he served in the RAF and settled in Nottingham. A voice of calm during the 1958 St Ann's riots, Eric became known as the city’s Mr Fix It, serving as a JP for 19 years and receiving an OBE in 1978.

Hoping their buys will do them justice at auction are two teams of shoppers. In blue are mum and daughter Karen and Dorne, with their expert Irita Marriott, and in red are dad and son Faz and Hamzah, with Lesley Kiddell-Spencer. At one stall, the blue team goes quackers over ceramic ducks, while the reds are taken with a pair of dog-shaped nutcrackers, but Lesley doesn’t think they’re worth shelling out for.

Back in Nottingham, auctioneer Hettie Jago gives her assessment of the teams’ items before trying to sell them to the highest bidders.
