25th Anniversary of 9/11

A service to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 from churches either side of Ground Zero, St Paul's and St Nicholas', New York.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks on 11th September 2001. This service, introduced by the Bishop of New York, the Rt Rev Matthew Heyd features two churches either side of Ground Zero - St Paul’s Chapel and St Nicholas’ Orthodox Church.
The service will begin at Trinity Church's St Paul’s Chapel which was used as a refuge for the recovery workers and grieving families with contributions from Rev Kristin Miles and Rev Patrick Williams based around Isaiah 2:1-4. Bishop Matthew Heyd shares his experience of the day, seeing the towers being hit while working in Midtown, and the impact it had on his life and on the city. The service then moves to St Nicholas’ Church, which was destroyed in the attacks, and will feature a reflection from Anthoula Katsimatides who lost her brother John. The church was rebuilt in 2022 and Fr Andreas Vithoulkas will share how it’s a symbol of hope and resurrection.

Music will be a combination of anthems led by Trinity Choir directed by Melissa Attenbury and Greek Orthodox hymns and prayer chants led by chanter Dimitrios Katsiklis. Anthems include: Abide with me (Moses Hogan), When we love (Elaine Hagenberg), We shall walk through the valley (Undine Smith Moore)
Producers: Miriam Williamson and Carmel Lonergan.
