3. Shelter
Dan Richards meets the people gathering life skills to survive in troubled times.
We are living in turbulent times and it is easy to feel anxious about the state of the world. The pace of change is fast, and the future often seems uncertain and out of our control. Given our reliance on technology, any sort of outage could be catastrophic. Could you survive - and thrive - in a world without global supply chains, the internet and 24-hour energy?
In this series the writer Dan Richards seeks out the tradition bearers and carriers of ancient knowledge who actively choose to live in close connection with the natural world around them. A return to first principles of what it means to be human and the kind of people you would like to be around if things fell apart.
In Episode 3 - Shelter, Dan visits the Scottish Crannog Centre on the banks of Loch Tay in Highland Perthshire where a village is growing. At the heart of it is the reconstruction of a crannog, a round house sitting on stilts out in the loch. It's based on a design from 2500 years ago after archaeological evidence revealed that there were at least 18 of these wooden structures around the loch. The current building team is learning how the crannogs were assembled. In the process, they are finding that we have much to discover from these ancient design principles when it comes to sustainability.
