The Story of 2002

A look back at a year where Top of the Pops comes under attack from the TV talent show and girl groups are back at the top.

A look back at a year where Top of the Pops comes under attack from the TV talent show and girl groups are back at the top.

2002 sees the return of Sugababes 2.0, the chart domination of talent show winners (and losers), as well as the cultural phenomenon which is Vanessa Carlton with that piano riff. Meanwhile, Swedish band The Hives arrive at Television Centre, whilst indie rock continues its early 00s climb of the chart. With 2,000 episodes under its belt, TOTP is more diverse and dominant than ever before.

Contributors include Mutya and Keisha from Sugababes, Kimberly Walsh from Girls Aloud, Vanessa Carlton, Liberty X, The Hives, Frankie Bridge from S Club Juniors, Gareth Gates and broadcasters Trevor Nelson, Pete Tong and Sarah Cawood.
