21st Century Folk and Katherine Priddy
Katherine Priddy performs live as part of Radio 2's 21st Century Folk.
This week, 21st Century Folk returns to Radio 2.
Here on The Folk Show, Katherine Priddy joins Mark to perform her song from the project along with music from her new album: These Frightening Machines.
21st Century Folk sees five people inspire five new folk songs. In a summer that includes the FIFA World Cup, the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and more, this year's theme is 'sport'.
Our inspirational subjects are Hannah, Andy, Victor, Jackie and Jonathan.
Hannah was a young carer and passionate cyclist until a serious crash put her life on hold - she's since qualified as a firefighter. Andy treasures some boxing gloves that belonged to his uncle Adrian, who was tragically killed aged 18 in 1974. Victor was forced to be a child soldier in Sierra Leone, before sleeping rough in London - he's now a well-loved member of Arsenal's community. Footballer Jackie missed the chance to represent England women in the 1980s but she's now been capped in the over-60s walking football squad. Jonathan is a passionate advocate for running in the west end of Glasgow.
Our folk songwriters are Katherine Priddy, Martin Simpson, Passenger AKA Mike Rosenberg, Megson, Eddi Reader and John Douglas. Each of them are talented stars of British folk and the wider world of music.
The full stories behind each song can be heard in a two-hour '21st Century Folk' special on BBC Sounds. You can hear live features on Jeremy Vine, every afternoon this week from 12pm. Videos of the songs can be seen on Radio 2's social channels.
Produced by Pomona Audio in Salford for BBC Radio 2.
