Ports, Palaces and Princes
Bettany Hughes continues her journey through Turkey exploring the wonders of Istanbul and uncovers the country's biggest archaeological dig.
Bettany Hughes continues her journey through Turkey exploring the wonders of Istanbul; this time Bettany uncovers Turkey's biggest archaeological dig, holding a piece of an ancient boat recovered from a long-lost Byzantine trading port. At the jewel of the Ottoman empire - Topkapi Palace, Bettany explores the extensive gardens, revealing the Sultan's passion for flowers and exotic animals. With rare access into the pavilions and kiosks, Bettany marvels at the colourful mosaics and stained glass windows. Leaving Istanbul, Bettany visits the Princes' Islands where mansions stand side by side with the ruined home of political exile Trotsky. With special access to the Prinkipo Orphanage - Europe's largest wooden building - Bettany is moved by the stories of more than 1,000 children that once lived there.
