Our Planet, Our Pledge: Celebrating 100 years of Attenborough

BBC Radio Leicester are looking for local schools to join them in marking Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.

On Friday 8 May 2026, schools across Leicestershire are invited to take part in a county‑wide 'Day of Environmental Action'.

How to take part?

The aim is simple: take action for the planet in honour of one of Leicestershire’s most inspiring figures, Sir David Attenborough.

Schools that pledge can choose any activity that feels appropriate and fits their community, curriculum, and environment. Whether it’s a whole‑school project or a small class‑led initiative.

Schools are encouraged to be as creative or as simple as they like, here's some ideas:

  • Biodiversity Boost: Create bug hotels, bird feeders, or wildflower patches.
  • Litter & Waste Action: Run a school‑wide litter pick or waste‑free lunch day.
  • Learning Outdoors: Host nature walks, outdoor lessons, or citizen science activities.
  • Creative Projects: Produce artwork, poetry, or performances inspired by nature.
  • Community Engagement: Invite families or local groups to join in.

Why Take Part?

  • Celebrate a local hero who has inspired millions to care for the natural world.
  • Empower pupils to take meaningful environmental action.
  • Strengthen your school’s eco‑credentials and support curriculum links.
  • Join a collective movement of 100 Leicestershire schools acting together.
  • Create a long‑lasting symbol of hope by planting a Woodland Trust tree.

Tree Planting Gift

The first hundred schools who signed up will receive a Thank You for participating, thanks to The Woodland Trust.

The planted trees will create a living legacy for generations of pupils.

Please Note: We have now reached 100 schools so there are no more trees to gift, but you are still more than welcome to join in our celebrations on Friday 8 May.
