BBC Open Music - Find your space in radio and music

BBC Open Music is a development scheme run in collaboration with BBC Radio 3 that brings new diverse talent into the world of classical music broadcasting with a focus on either Radio and Live Events Production or Technical Production.

Trainees from a wide range of backgrounds receive skills development training, mentoring and shadowing opportunities, giving them an insight into classical broadcasting at the BBC.

The training aims to develop key skills in either Radio and Live Events Production or Technical Production including scriptwriting, package creation, recording techniques and mixing. The trainees then put these skills into practice creating their own radio programmes.

In order to demystify classical music broadcasting at the BBC and explore their potential career options in this area the trainees are matched with a mentor working in BBC Audio and Music and are given the opportunity to shadow across a range of Radio 3 output including the Breakfast show, InTune and BBC Proms broadcasts.

The final element of the scheme sees trainees collaborating on a creative project during their time on BBC Open Music, working with BBC teams to create a live music event which showcases their diverse range of thinking. This year the trainees have curated a BBC Radio 3 Friday Night is Music Night concert with the BBC Concert Orchestra on 18 October at Alexandra Palace.
