Rise to the challenge

Notts cricketer bowled over

Sports Relief takes place on Sunday 16 March. Notts bowler Paul Franks saw first hand how money raised through the charity is helping young homeless people in the city.

Thanks to money raised through Sport Relief, Nottingham YMCA provides structured support for the homeless and unemployed in a caring environment that promotes the development of each individual.

Sport Relief cash is being used to offer activity programmes to get young homeless people involved in sport, health exercise and fitness.

They also offer an open programme where young people can participate in gym sessions and classes, team sports and health and nutrition advice are also provided through a co-ordinated approach with involved and partnering agencies and a worker.

Swapping the training field at Trent Bridge for Monday’s training session at the YMCA gym, Paul says:

"The young people have emphasised how much their self belief and self esteem have improved since coming to the gym sessions.

"This has given them the confidence to deal with other issues in their lives and to work towards the end goal of helping to prevent homelessness."

Sport Relief 2008 is all about challenging yourself, friends, family and colleagues to do something sporty and raise cash.

Nottingham mile

Sunday 16 March will see thousands of residents in the city take to the streets and go the distance for Sport Relief.

Victoria Embankment is where all the action will kick off and this year milers can choose to do 1, 3 or 6 miles, so can select the distance that is a challenge for them and make sure they get sponsored while they do it.

The action kicks off at 10.30 (am) at Victoria Embankment. The event is hosted by BBC Radio Nottingham's Dean Jackson and Colin Hazelden from East Midlands Today.

Nigel Clough, Frank Clarke and Chris Broad are all taking part.

If you can't make it down to the race itself, check out your friends and family running for charity on The Mile Show, BBC1 on Sunday (3-5pm).
