Hopes for 2008

A wishlist of what people would like to see happen in Nottinghamshire in the next year.

Peace and goodwill for all... and a final decision (after the public enquiry) about the tramway extension and its route (James Taylor, writer and man from Mansfield).

Hull in the firing line

I'm looking forward to the launch of the Centre for Contemporary Art, Nottingham in the Lace Market. Hopefully they'll focus on lots of the talented artists from the city as well as those from outside. I'd also like to see the Magpies get promoted, but that's probably not going to happen until 2009. So I guess the most we can hope for is that our beloved city gets less of a panning in the national media and they start to focus on some other town for their scare stories instead. Hull... you have been warned (Jared Wilson, Editor of Leftlion Magazine).

Happy smiley people

I would love to see a more chilled out Nottingham in 2008 with fewer grumpy and aggressive people. Nottingham has had a good atmosphere of optimism this year, but there's still loads of fights in the city centre every Friday and Saturday night along Parliament Street. Is it really worth it? Especially when there is so much great stuff going on in our city at the moment, why waste the effort? (musician Rob Maddison).

Ticker tape parade

I'd like to see Nottingham Forest get promoted. Finally. And Nottinghamshire win the County Championship. I don't know much about ice hockey but if the Panthers win something too then that would be some kind of treble so maybe there'll be a ticker tape parade or something. Art-wise I'm looking forward to events happening in the run up to the opening of CCAN (Centre for Contemporary Art, Nottingham). It's an exciting time in the arts scene with a lot of changes on the Nottingham arts horizon. I'd also like to see a new performance-y night called Hatch happening in March... because I'm involved in it! (Michael Pinchbeck, writer/artist).

Save Holme Pierrepont

Firstly, Nottingham Rugby winning the EDF Cup, beating Northampton Saints in the final in front of a full house at Twickenham, as well as finishing second in the first division behind the Saints themselves. Secondly, a solution being found for Holme Pierrepont that protects the future of that area of the county. It needs to retain its sporting prowess, but incorporating some form of leisure and commercial offer that means it is a viable business proposition. Thirdly, Nottingham really driving forward its' position as a city of sport (Chris Simon (aka Pel), Director of Perfect Motion and founder of Nottingham Touchrugby, proud father of three and husband to Joanna).

More green spaces

I'd like to see more invested in protecting wildlife in Nottinghamshire than ever before. Threat such as increased development and climate change means that wildlife needs more room in which to adapt and as a society we must invest in creating a living landscape with much larger areas of wildlife habitat all interconnected so that wild creatures can move and adapt to changes (Erin McDaid, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust).

Fitting recognition

I would like to see the Brian Clough statue commissioned and in place in the city centre - after the hard work that has gone into the fundraising, and the tremendous generosity shown by the people of Nottingham (and beyond) it will be a wonderful moment to see the whole project finally come to a conclusion and for our fine city to have a fitting monument in honour of somebody who has had more of an impact on the place than anybody else (Alan Fisher, writer and Reds fan).

I would absolutely love to see the rules changed to allow Brian Clough to get the posthumous knighthood that he so richly deserves (Rishab Baruah, Reds fan and expat).

Quieter buskers... but more of them

I would like to see an increase in the number of official street-performer locations in Nottingham, but I would like all performers to be aware of their volume and turn down their electric gadgets. Not off ....just down a little. In this way there will be more space for others. Maybe somewhere sheltered from the rain? Either way, I would like to hear more live performance music and Nottingham attempt to be, Nottingham, City of Smiles 2008 (Joe Paris, Nottingham's one-armed busker).

Endless supply of spicy sausages

I would like to see the German Christmas market become a permanent fixture, so I can eat those spicy red sausages on a daily basis. Perhaps even an hourly basis. Also I would like to see free liposuction become part of the market (Rob Yescombe, Screenwriter, Free Radical Design).
