This Is England

This is England in Nottingham

Shane Meadows new movie is about to hit the big screen. It was mainly shot in Nottingham.

The first of several films with a Nottingham backdrop is due to be released on Friday 27 April 2007.

This Is England is a part autobiographical tale of the Nottingham-based director Shane Meadows.

It tells the tale of a young lad growing up in 1983. He joins a skinhead gang and has a lot of fun until an older, nastier member is released from prison. Suddenly the youngster is having to make big decisions about violence and racism.

Choosing Nottingham

The script supervisor for the movie is Diarmid Scrimshaw. He has to make sure everything gets shot properly.

"It's definitely got that northern reality to it," says Diarmid about This Is England.

"It's got that bite, the tension that Shane works very well into his movies.

"We shot in St Ann's although it's a fictional northern town. People were really supportive and friendly. Visually it's strong. Nottingham's got a definite look."

Shooting the movie

Unlike most films This Is England was shot chronologically.

"Shane wants the story to evolve," says Diarmid.

"When the actors make it their own it gives it a truth and reality that's much stronger."

Award winning

Even before its official release This Is England has already picked up several awards. The latest was Best British Independent Film at the 9th Annual British Independent Film Awards. The Most Promising Newcomer award was won by Thomas Turgoose who plays Shaun in the movie.
