Wristbands
Wristbands

Bands of gold

Adam E. Smith
Wristbands are everywhere at the moment, but are they just a fashion accessory?

Profile: Adam E Smith

I'm a second year student of English with Media and Cultural Studies at Nottingham Trent University and the News Editor of Platform, the uni's newspaper. My main hobby is reading: I'll literally read anything. I love listening to all kinds of music, especially live. I find writing a lot of fun, from articles to short stories (anything but poems!). Travelling thrills me; trying to play squash keeps me fit; and drumming excites me.

Some wear ribbons, others sport pin badges. But almost everyone you see at the moment seems to be representing charities and campaigns by wearing wristbands.

From the ubiquitous yellow Livestrong band to the white one fighting poverty, wristbands have captured the hearts of many. And with the satirical launch of anti-wristband campaigns, the phenomenon has untold depths.

The craze started last year when cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong began his Livestrong campaign to raise money to help the families of cancer patients. The campaign fostered a simple yellow wristband to raise awareness. Last month, Livestrong announced that they had sold forty million bands worldwide. The original goal was to raise $5m but the total is currently well over $44m.

Lee Lancashire is a PhD student in cancer research. He says “it’s good to wear it because of my research.” Lancashire acknowledges the success of the Livestrong campaign but says “it’s started a trend. A lot of people wear them as fashion accessories… maybe detracting away from the charity.” Ultimately, of course, even as a fashion item, the omnipresent band still raises awareness.

Student Ellie Varricchio sports three separate wristbands because “they all mean something to me.” She supports the Livestrong charity as well as the Breast Cancer Care movement and the Beat Bullying campaign, the original 100,000 blue bands for which were allocated within 36 hours of its launch. Varricchio has found that through wearing the bands, they’ve become fashionable, “and that’s a bonus.” But she maintains that their primary function is two-fold: charity and awareness.

Most recently, an abundance of fake wristbands have stormed through schools and high streets. Varricchio criticizes the motives of the vendors, presuming that “they’re just trying to be fashionable, but they’re creating money for criminals; the money isn’t going to charity.” Many schools have even forbidden the bands for not conforming to uniform policies.

The wristbands are available from selected stores and online, but they are also a current hot item on Internet auction sites. Student Craig Skerry’s flatmate bought many £1.50 Breast Cancer Care bands and sold them on the Internet for up to £11, sending the profits to the charity. Skerry himself wears a black and white ‘anti-racism in football’ wristband.

He says that “a lot of people wear this band for fashion. I’m 50/50 fashion and believing in it.” Although many now buy wristbands for fashion, Skerry points out that “there is a genuine reason behind them.” His band is a constant reminder to Skerry and others that racism is not to be tolerated.

The multifarious wristbands may just be an annoying fashion phase but they raise money and awareness for important causes. It should be remembered though, that wristbands are just one of the many methods of doing this: no one needs a wristband to help charity.

rich
why are people criticising this? basically, the wristbands have made donating to charity cool and fashionable. i challenge anyone to see a downside to that!

alex murray
I don't think there a fashion acsesory because there helpping charerty.

Claire
Its already wrong when people make fake DVD's and fake clothes brands but when you're stealing from charity its just BAD.

leanne king
hi recently at my school a boy has come along with a beat bullying band but it hasnt got the real website on it says the same beat bullying on and it says somthing about funny people on it is it real? i have got the one from the onelife page wich i know is real the boy from my school says he got it from the card shop for £2 age 11 st francis ce junior school

seb4 kelly fuller
why sould people be selling fake bands.DON'T U UNDERSTAND ITS NOT A JOKE

jimmy
most wristbands are a way of showing you support a charity the best is make poverty history well thats what i support but some big cheeses think its cool and wear fake ones which is really really really bad like innit

sidrah
fake wristbands should be stopped because the amout of fake wristband you buy and pay for don't stand for the right reason and therefore should be stopped because people who by fake wristband don't know if there fake so there happy because they think they donated the right money for the right cause.

Jon :)
I know you're banging on about these wristbands being fashion and what not, but at the end of the day, (most of) the people who buy these wristbands wouldnt donate money to these charities of their own back. Therefore this is a win win situation for the charities and people who want something for their money. (i.e. charities have found a way of getting chavs to donate money - and theres a lot of them :P)

Sarah
I think that the wrist-bands are worn generally for fashion. But I don't think that really matters because as long as they are bought and the money goes to charity it's all the same. Wearing the wrist-bands, if only for fashion, will remind the owner and people who see it about the awful goings on around the world and will encourage other people to buy the bands. This will increase the money going out towards the charities and make more people aware and support the charities.

Chris
there are so many, I would like there to be a list on the net somewhere so that you can find out what a person on the TV is standing up for

Katie
I think that the wrist bands for charity are great. yes it would be good if everyone who wore one thought about the meaning behind it. but at the end of the day the fact it has become a fashion iteam has earned the charities more money. would they have sold this many if it was uncool to wear them? I don't think they would of. I just think its a shame that there are the 'fake' ones that are purely fashionable and not charity related.

Emily
I think that the fake wristbands sould be stopped because the money that you buy them with doesn't go to charity

chantelle
I think wrist bands are good because they help raise money for charity and i love them as well i think there very fashionable

shell
They have started as a fashion for my 6 yr old son but as he started collecting them he has become more aware of the reasons behind them and it has risen his awareness of the issues behind them.

pip
bands are such a good idea as they stand out but only people sellin them for charity should be allowed. Not people tryin to make money as a fashion assessory

Maisy
I think that wrist bands are a good idea as they are a good way to make money for charities and appeal to all ages it show that people care and they also look quite good i think we should keep making wrist bands.

tina collie
i think the charitie bands were a good idea and they r super cool and i got one myself i got an anti racist one super cool or what

Ells
I think it's awful that some people aren't giving the proceeds from selling the bands to charity!!! But I think the real ones are a fab idea!

chaz loves callum .R 4 ever
i think that people shouldnt be allowed to sell them on e-bay and make money out of them thats just wrong if the money aint going to charity !!!!!!!!!!!!

charli
i recon its a good idea and they should NOT be banned from schools !!!!!!!!!!!

anna anderson
Most of them are real but some of the ae fake. In my school there are millions of people wearing them. Some people only have one but there are pepole that have 12!!!! I just don't see the point when some of them are Fake.

bradley king
i think people sould understand them.

me!
i think the bands are a really good idea for the charitys but people do fake ones that gets on my nerves because you never know if there real or fake, Does anybody know a website for anti-racsim bands and all the money goes to charity? because i can't find one anywhere and i can't find any in the shops either :(

Nathan
I think it is a good way to help a charity but people selling fakes should be heavily fined.

Justin
I happen to have a livestrong wristband and a Drugg free wristband. i bought the livestrong wristband directly from the charity and i got the drugg free one at my local police station they often have REAL band at your local police stations... i think that not only does the moeny you paid go to cancer but by advertising the cauise more people are buying them and you are technically raisng more moeny1 I would not get one if they were not cool you people who wear em' for chairty thin they are cool too.... fu all... Jusitn

Nicola
i wear my make poverty history because i believe in the message it send not because there fashionable or wateve im a teen that complains if someone wears a band thats fake or they do even know what its for.

DEL BOY
i think the bands are a great idea for charity AND NOT FOR FASHION !!!! the people who buy them just for the fashion reasons shoud understand what they are for and why infact they are wearing them.

Parthy
I hav a cancer research one, and i think it is a great way to make people think bout charities, it creates more awareness....but, the fake ones r easy 2 get and more accesible, so ppl buyin dem more..dey shuld get more shopz..trusted shopz to sell em

jess
i think that they are great they are a cool way to support your charties

chaz
i think that wristbands are a good thing as it shows your support for people who have or have had cancer .

u r idiots
if you buy them straight from the charitys rather than a local tat shop or off ebay etc. then they won't be fake - duh!

Louise
There all over the place and at school today the teachers didnt mind enyway where do you get them?

jay jay
Harry Porter keep your trap shut for once in your wrist bands are good!!!!!!

roschelle
i wont one but everone i have brought was ****** fake.but its a good why of helping peps out that hav got cancer xxxxxxxxxx

roschelle
were do you get them from ya

Robyn Milne
If eveyrone would understand what the bands are for then maybe they would start to take an interest to finding out about that specific thing and then they wouldn't just think of them as a fashion accesory!

katie
i jus hav 2 say that i like these wristbands n all but tha fact that pplz buy em n then sell em 4 money is stupid!! i want 1 but wots tha point unless i actually kno ma money is going 2 tha charity!?

tom
where can i get em from

Harry Porter
Your not cool because you wear a stupid wrisband!!!!!!

bob
i think there rubbish jst look like u got a piece of plastic on ya

Mel, Leeds
I think that the wristbands are doing exactly what the y were supposed to do - raise awareness of and money for, the charity involved. Unfortunately however, the charities involved don't seem to be making the wristbands as accessible as the conmen seem to be. And there lies the problem.

tash
bcareful, da only place u can get real 1s frm r: cahrity shops, sport shops and internet

Gina
I wanna no were 2 get a make poverty history one dere da best but i fink all of em r cool but its annoyin wen dere fake.

Anna
i think the concept of wristbands start off good. its a way to show our support. but nowdays just because the celeb are wearing them.. it makes them a fashion accessory. the worst thing is that a lot of people have purchase hundreds of these wristbands and sold them on internet to make profit.. i think its ridiculous.

aaron hand
I think theres no such thing as a fake band i mean you cantget fake elastic band can you!

monny
I fink peopl hoo sell fake wristbands r very selfish as they are keeping the "charity money" to themselves and not finkin bout da real meanin of da band!!!

emma watson
So wot if they are a fashion craze thay stilll raise money 4 charitiy i wera one too

chris
i want 1 how much r day

heather
i think it good people are supporting and it is for charity

???????????????
it builds you self-confidence

Josh smedley
it would be bossif the bands if they sold REAL BANDS instead of fake ones

CIARA LOVES TOM-TOM
IF THE SHOPS ARE GOING TO BE SOLD THE SHOULD AT LEAST BE REAL!!!!!!!!!XXXXX

sarah
i think its great people are wearing the bands so show their support. i want black, white, pink & blue bands to show my support!

suk
i think that they are a good because all the money goes 2 charity and u there cool!

NIgel Lowe
if there not careful the government will put V.A.T on them

Kirsty Henderson
I think if bands are going to get sold in popular shops they should atleast give the money to charity!!!

Ricardo Smuel
I think is fantastic to were the bands and is great fashion.

caz
i wear the wristbands they are a great way to raise money for charity. and if my school stops us from wearing them then i will still carry on as they show that i do care about charitys

amy baker
they are so cool everyone should get some not just to look cool but to support a charity.

conor
they are a great fasion and i wear them myself but everyone says thet they are just a craze but they are a new way of giving money to charity

Stewart
Yet another chav accessory

Huw Tyler
I have to agree with Daniel; i acknowledge that they are cool but at he same time they are saving lives and raising awareness on certain issues...cancer is very close to my heart and so i love the idea of helping people with cancer.

Ellie!
In my school they are very fashionable-and some of my friends ware about 10 at a time!

Rob
I think it is fantastic the support that the famous and the joe public have given to these causes.

Kristy
They are definently more fashion, but as long as the money is going to charity them thats fine with me.

Gareth
I think it is good that people are getting them as long as they do sell them on for loads and loads of money cause that is just not good and the are wrecking charity

Sara
i wish i had one?

Grace Millen
i think they may be a fashion craze but people still wear them to show their support in their chosen charity

Ben
I don't know if my beat bullying band is real or fake.

Ian
It would be nice if everyone wearing a wristband has supported that charity in a more definite way, by giving money or their time to help. I only have a Tearfund "Make Poverty History" white one, and I know that it keeps the issue in my mind and my praers

Angad Singh
I think that wrist bands are a fashion statement for kids or adults to show off infront of their mates. However they are good in a way because you are supporting a good cause and the money that you spend on them will go to charity unless the shopkeepers are selling fake ones.

katie
i think bands are a good thing and a bad thing, it is a good thing because it helps to raise money for people with cancer and emergency's in their life but a bad thing because it is kind of an accessory because some people just wear them to see who can get the most

antonia
i think they are good if you wear them to support the charity and to raise money , not a fashion accessory.

sadie
i think the idea of the bands are brillant becasue the messages which are in the band show us what is in the world. by people wearing them it shows they care.and feel that we should change by giving the money for the bands which is not enough for it to go away but the've got the idea

Hayley Saunderson
I think the bands are a good idea to raise money for people who need it. Other people though abuse the idea and wear them for their own popularity and fashion acccessory

mitchell alls
bands in my opion are just a fashion statement. i think that people buy the bands to look good around their mates.

Mark
Having spoken to a lot of people wearing them, they actually dont know why they are doing it. Although the Charitys benefit, isn't it wrong that they are now seen as a fashion item?

Kerry
I got the Yellow one for Lance Armstrong's livestrong campaign last year because it was a charity close to me, however I think they are just seen as a fashion item now - especially with shops and market stalls selling them where you can guarantee the only good cause the money is going to is their back pockets.

Julie Kirk
I think they are a very positive way of showing we care whilst raising funds for good causes, but I've had trouble finding the official wristbands to buy.

Jim, Nottingham.
I personnally think the charity wristbands are a great idea, I wear a yellow LIVESTRONG wristband as cancer has had an affect on my family and the Lance Armstrong bands gives myself and the male population a way of raising awareness and showing support for the cause. However, I find that people wearing 3 or 4 different bands are sending a mixed message and as such assume that they are being worn as fashion accessories, which detracts from the original prinicple of the wristbands.

The Fad..
Come on chaps!!...lets get real...the only people to benefit from these arm braclets are the people with stores and shops etc!!!...they are buying copies for 5p and selling them for £1.00..make up your own mind!!

tom
i think that if they want to raise more mony then they should make more

Paula
I am afraid I don't have any wristbands and neither do my two kids. I've heard so many stories about bogus sellers that I wouldn't know where to buy the real thing. As with any charitable gimmick, it is, unfortunately open to exploitation, which, is very sad.

neil
My son had cancer last year and has got over it. I am proud to wear the yellow band and it all money goes to a great cause. Well done Lance.

daniel
i think it is good that people are getting them
