The first thing I must say is that this review may be a little biased as I have been a huge David Essex fan for over 30 years and I've lost count of the number of times I've been to see him! David Essex has had a long and remarkable career that has combined concerts, theatre, composing, films and television - all with huge success. As well as all that he's also sold millions of records and had 23 top 30 singles in Britain alone, and even after over 40 years in the business, his concerts still sell out - even in arenas. He has the audience in the palm of his hand from the moment he steps on stage. He knows his fans well and he knows what they want. They know exactly what to expect, so no-one is disappointed. | "We all scream that 'yes we'd still love him' if he were a plumber, in If I Could" | |
My second confession is that it's taken me 34 years to sit on the front row at a David Essex concert and it was fantastic. A forty something fan's dream come true! He sang a good mix of old and new opening with the title track from his new album "Beautiful Day" and treated us to a few more including In Our sky and What Did I Do. He's penned all the tracks and they sounded good. Although I enjoy listening to his new stuff, what me and the rest of the audience are waiting for are the old favourites, and of course he never disappoints. We all scream that yes we'd still love him if he were a plumber in "If I Could", and we all dream of course that we will be the one he'll ask to "Hold Me Close". In the encore he tells us he's "Gonna Make You A Star", but to us he already is, and he signed off with "Missing You", which of course we all will until next time. The list of hits he sang is endless, but I was delighted that he included my personal favourite, "Imperial Wizard". He seemed really pleased with the atmosphere in the Grand Opera House, calling it cozy. He probably feels he could reach out and touch us all and he manages to make you feel as if there is only you and him there at times. He's almost ready to collect his bus pass, but Mr Essex has lost none of that boyish charm. The hair may be thinning and grey (surely that comes to us all) but he still has that wonderful smile and that delightful twinkle in those incredibly blue eyes. Rock On David Essex, I'm certainly still your number one fan. Carole Green |
