Meet Lucy

Meet Lucy, a PPE student (don't worry, we don't know what that means either) with her heart set on journalism... but so far it seems every door is well and truly shut on that front. Not to worry, perhaps a political career beckons.

Hi I'm Lucy Cranshaw, a final year PPE student at York University currently spending most of my waking hours trying to find myself a job in the real world.

I hail from bootiful, sunny Norfolk where I live in a teeny town called Sheringham, right by the sea. It felt like York was a massive metropolis of a place when I started here almost three years ago. But now it feels like I've been here my whole life and actually the city really isn’t very big.

With all my final exams a fait accompli I only have two mildly irritating essays on Aristotle to do before I am totally free from the academic constraints of Uni life. Fabulous, I thought, weeks and weeks to do nothing, to pursue my long term ambitions of learning a new language or setting up my own website or visiting all my friends across the country in other Unis. But alas, as my boyfriend is living in London I'm due to move down to the big smoke in 2 months and as yet have no job!

Not that I haven’t been trying, and I did have an offer to work in a bank, but being the idiot idealist that I am I turned it down and decided to pursue something that I really wanted to do, preferably involving writing.

Thus far I have been rejected for every single journalism job I have applied for but have recently applied to work for my local MP in Westminster. The drawback…...the post is unpaid for a minimum of three months! How will I survive I hear you cry? I'm hoping that the nice Lib Dems will take pity on me and allow me to beg for scraps of their lunch and perhaps a travel card.

I'm optimistic, if that fails I could pursue one of my other interests like playing croquet or amateur netball or starting up my own newspaper perhaps. It is all quite exciting and I hope that with a few more applications my luck will change and a full blown career will be waiting for me in London.
