LMT crowd pleaser (c) Andrew Stanistreet

Review: Little Man Tate

Fibbers, 4th May 2006
With all tickets sold for the night, Emma Jackson suspected the evening might be a success, but nothing prepared her for the great crowd of dedicated fans that created such a memorable atmosphere...

CARDBOARD RADIO – (Andrew Gaines, Simon Edwards & Ben Cordrey) got the show on the road with their 8-track set. The amalgamation of thumping drums, true to life lyrics and 70’s kinky guitar sound throughout “Him, her, you, me and everyone” sent the army of young devotees into a frenzy.

“Back Alley Girl Blues” told the story of catching diseases from girls you shouldn’t have been with…?!? Their set fused Brit pop – punk – rock and created a distinct sound adding character throughout their many tracks.

The shaggy haired, Yorkshire band entertained the ever-increasing swarm with comical banter and friendly quarrelling between themselves. Gaines was animated in his performance, with characteristics of the legend, Jarvis Cocker.

After a “cheap Belgium beer” interlude, the band picked up the pace for the last tracks forcing their followers to bound around the stage area. The response for the end of their set was that of true dedication, which shows that this band know had to satisfy their supporters.

PINT SHOT RIOT (Rick Emmerson – Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar, Phil Browne – Lead Guitar, Chris Connell – Drums/Vocals & Dave Page – Bass Guitar) are another band who wear their hearts on their sleeves, with an honest sound and stylish approach.

Tracks such as “Start Diggin”, and “Holes” describe the band's own experiences with fast paced, feet stomping anthemic fashion.

“Steele a Glance” with its clean, bouncy, pop-punk feel was well received from the energetic crowd.

LITTLE MAN TATE (Jon Windle – Vox/Guitar, Maz – Guitar, Ben Sturgess – Bass, & Dan Fields – Drums) finally responded to the excitable chants of “LMT, LMT!!” As they mounted the stage the eager mob roared. Opening track “Man I Hate Your Band” had the whole venue bounding around to the intense atmosphere that they generated.

The good looks of the clean cut band had the ladies in the crowd enraptured, while the male fans were bellowing the lyrics, hanging from the shoulders of their mates, creating a mosh-pit of appreciation.

Half way through the track “Court Report” the band stopped singing to allow the crowd to take over. There was a great sense of intimacy between the band and fans that added to the energy.

My personal favourite track “Hello Miss Lovely” with its addictive guitar riffs and stomping beats encouraged yet more passion from the onlookers. Jon took time at the end of the track to thank everyone for making each gig better, every time.

The band played a polished and inspiring 12-track live set including new song “What? What you got?” which has already had airplay on Steve Lamacq’s Radio 1 show. The public and media love them, I have since become a huge fan, so what are you waiting for?? Surely enough said?

Interview

Emma - “What goals did you set yourself in the beginning and have you achieved them yet?

Maz - “We didn’t set any. It’s all just been little steps. We all got together for our first jam back in June 05 to see how we got along and get used to each other. That worked and we soon put together a demo. Next thing we were playing out first gig and now here we are touring. We’ve just enjoyed having a laugh together and we have belief in ourselves as a band. It just works really well.

Emma - “What has been your best venue so far and what would be your dream one?

Maz - “Outside of Sheffield, I’d have to say Fibbers. Everytime we’ve played here we’ve had such a great crowd, we couldn’t ask for anymore and it just gets better every time. My dream venue would be Glastonbury”.

Emma - “Who would you like to support dead or alive”?

Maz - “The Clash”

Emma - “Your style has been compared to that of The Arctic Monkeys. How do you feel about that?

Maz - “Only because we’re from Sheffield. We knew them from working a venue they played at. They showed a great following without a record company. We saw their rise. I don’t think musically we’re the same though.

Emma - “What question would you like to be asked?

Maz - “We’ve never been asked how it feels when you come off stage. It’s such a great feeling. It’s just…brilliant. It’s like the Cup Final or something. You can’t sleep – your head is racing with recollections from the night”.

Emma - “Finally – crumpets… .a sweet or savoury snack?”

Maz - “Awww best covered in butter but I could be tempted to add some jam”
